Given how many important files are located on my PC (like all the content pages, guides, etc) for this site, trust me, I look after my PC. This is not a case of neglect.

Re: URGENT: Possible virus alert!!

In general, it's no longer possible to run Windows accounts with administrative privileges. It was a bad idea back in 2000, and it's an even worse idea today (took me 5 years to convince my bosses to cut back on user privs and to eat the increased support issues as a result of limited permissions).

Other avenues of defense are:

1) FlashBlock / NoScript - It's no longer reasonable to trust that every bit of Javascript and Flash out there on the internet is safe. This has some dire challenges for ad-supported sites. There's simply too many bits of Javascript/Flash out there which will install malware on your PC.

(A lot of the current Javascript attacks are by attackers breaking into FTP accounts with poor security, then modifying every page on the targeted website to link in the Javascript attack code.)

I try to whitelist as many sites as I feel comfortable about - but this also increases my exposure.

Ad networks are going to have to go back to static images and simple text ads with no Flash or Javascript.

2) Anti-Virus - AV software is *very* much behind the curve on browser-based attacks. It generally takes them a few days to catch up, but in the meantime the malware can target a few thousand to a few million PCs.

3) Move away from Windows XP where users often run as local administrators in order to get anything done. OS X systems run as limited user accounts as a default, as do Ubuntu (and most Linux) and Vista.
