Site Ads

So I haven't been around in quite awhile, due to quitting WoW, getting a girlfriend, and various other draws on my time. I have been dropping by to watch the news and see upcoming things for warlocks.

Anyway, I just cleared my browser cache for some testing purposes and when I came to the Den, I saw adds for the first time in years. And what were those adds? Gold sellers.

Now I know we're under new management here, and things may have changed as of late, but is this really something that the members want advertised on these boards? Is anyone else mildly upset by seeing these? Or is this just the reality of needing funding to keep the board going?

Re: Site Ads

No clue, I'm using adblock. However, if I was seeing them I'd rather they have some other theme than gold sellers, I just guess they pay the best since this is a wow related site.

Re: Site Ads

The problem, from what I recall, is that the ad content is not controlled by our site. It's Google's AdSense (I think), and therefore goes by keywords.
More subscribers = fewer ads.

Re: Site Ads

I subscribe, hence not having seen ads in years. And I know Akasha used to make an effort to control what kind of ads are displayed. I'm pretty sure people have at least some control over what gets shown, though again, things may have changed as of late.

Re: Site Ads

The site was rejected by two networks that Akaska used to run here. I had not expected that when I took over. So those ads are the primary revenue source. I know and understand the sentiment of the members and I will continue to look for other networks. As the economy picks up, I think I will find other sources.

Re: Site Ads

You can block the gold seller ads. Check with Total Biscuit at WoW Radio for a database of sites to reject ads from.

Re: Site Ads

and still you will have to keep getting ads to get some revenue to get the site going.
IU dont like em gold sellers eny more then the next person, but i do like the den, and when Milaulis doesnt get enough revenue to keep it going without em, it gets very hard to keep the den up.
So lets just accept the gold spammers, and even klick theyr links.
This will cost THEM gold, bring the den some revenue, and make gold selling a little less profitable

( dont actually buy the gold tough )

Thanks Milaulis, that's the tidbit I was looking for.

Re: Site Ads

I have a question...

How much does it cost to run this site for a year? Maybe if there was a target, we could avoid having ads entirely if like public radio or TV, you could say if we reach X$ amount in donations and subscriptions we don't have to do ads for the rest of the year.

And then have a running tally somewhere to say how far we need to reach.

Are we really that far away? Is it really more than $1000 or $2000 a year? I know a lot of people here are students and the like, but people with jobs etc for whom this site makes a difference, I am sure some would be willing to give a little more of themselves to reach a specific goal.
