Re: Site Ads

I do use adblock with firefox because i don't like any ads when i'm browsing, but i have tried my best to disable the ABP and click a few for the den, and silmol when you say thats a good way to get a keylogger, i would hope that milaulis has did enough research in placing ads that he avoided companies that work with sites that do crap like that. however, no matter how much we don't like ads they do help the den, and this site is definitely a treasure trove of warlock info! so milausis do what you need to do to keep the place running, hope the numbers are still as high as they used to be, i haven't been on in a while either, last year of college and recently engaged, so my calendar is PACKED!! i do get some time here and there to do some achievements and tear into some PVP!

And then have a running tally somewhere to say how far we need to reach.

Are we really that far away? Is it really more than $1000 or $2000 a year? I know a lot of people here are students and the like, but people with jobs etc for whom this site makes a difference, I am sure some would be willing to give a little more of themselves to reach a specific goal.
Excellent idea Dyson!
Milaulis, is there a feasible way to accomplish this, possibly as a weekly post even?

Come to think of it, I can't even see a place to actually donate anymore. I swear I saw a donation link many months ago but for whatever reason there is no obvious link to be able to say "I'd like to give some money to the warlocks den just cuz I like it" right at this moment?

I could be wrong, but that may also help.

PS Kiralyn, hope you come back to the game soon! I always liked seeing your words of advice/wisdom on these forums.

Re: Site Ads

It's under your UserCP, linked on the left as "Paid Subscriptions". Same link I provided earlier this thread. We might want to make that more obvious as well. Possibly put a Paypal "Donate" button on the top bar area of the forums. There's a lot of 'gray' space up there right now (at least on my screen there is).

Re: Site Ads

I don't know if the homepage overhaul is still underway, but I agree that making the ability to donate prominent would be a good thing.

I also like the idea of the fundraiser. I know we've done similar a couple times when things with Akasha were getting tight to great success. Having a yearly drive could potentially produce great results.

And it's nice to know I'm remembered around here! I don't see myself coming back for icecrown, though the next expansion might get me. The idea of re-experiencing Azeroth is intriguing.

Re: Site Ads

Akasha was not very successful at replacing site income derived from ads with membership subscriptions. I do recall a long vent post when she was trying out Dugi's guides. In reviewing the stats, about 10% of the 12 thousand visitors per days are members. The rest read through our forums and choose not to become part of the community. That means a thousand or so members in total are my target audience for subscriptions and donations. I don't believe that is a large enough number to covert, however, I am open to at least trying to run a donation drive. I am not a graphic designer so if any of you are the creative sort, I would love the help in designing a large banner to splash on the front page or at the top of the forums. Only about 30% of visitors come from the front page. Otherwise, I will do my best to come with something.

I have chosen not to show registered members anything which I find is a decent compromise. I find that visitors who don't contribute to the site can at least pay for it by being shown the ad.

Just a note, revenue is largely derived from showing the ads, not clicks. So please refrain from purposely doing it. You will get the site banned in trying to help.

At some point in November, I will trying going adless and running on member support. Let's see how that works out.

Re: Site Ads

Milaulis,
I found some good info from Paypal @ https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/websc...-intro-outside
I also found some good stuff at the next page, particularly the advanced features of the buttons @ https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?c...scribe_buttons
Maybe we could use a subscribe button next to a donate button? Also, this could help us set up our own recurring donations to the site via Paypal.

Best Regards,
Cormanthor

Re: Site Ads

Hi everyone,

Im new here but Im going to through in my two cents.

I must admit the first time I came to this site I was surprised to see the adds for gold farmers. I know a lot of players are opposed to this and while I dont have a strong opinion either way I dont use them.

But knowing that they are supporting us is a nice change!
