Hi, my warlock recently hit level 80 and I am confused about specs. What spec would you recommend to a fresh 80 keeping in mind that my gear is not great yet? I do intend to buy a few pieces from the auction house, but can't afford the expensive Ulduar BoE epics. I only intend to do PvE (heroics and eventually raiding). PvP is not for me. I can read on various treads that Destruction is currently the top DPS spec but does that hold for lesser geared players as well? |

Re: Beginner 80 heroics spec
Until you're hit capped go 3/13/55 or any variant that includes supression. Once you reach the hit cap with gear/gems/enchants alone either go 41/30 or 0/13/58. You can also play affliction if that's you're taste, but I know very littel about affliction speccs. Go read the gear guids and fallenmans specc guide.

Don't bother with AH purchases ... good gear is easily available in Trial of the Champion and through farming Emblems of Conquests via heroic 5-mans. Unless you have tens of thousands of gold just laying around, instances can't be beat - plus you'll learn how to play your class. |

Another possibility is to get hit capped through quest / crafted / rep items, and pick the spec you like. Specs: 0/41/30 - Felguard and Decimation from the Demo tree, and all the fire buffs from Destro 53/1/17 - Haunt and Siphon Life from Affliction, Ruin from Destro. Recommended pet: Succubus, Imp for melee-unfriendly fights 3/13/55 - Suppression for Hit rating, Imp is a crit happy firebolt machine gun, and all the yummy fire talents in Destro. 0/13/58 - Same as above, but you swap out Suppression for Improved Soul Leech (Replenishment) Gear: Quest Rewards with Hit Rating Crafted Items with Hit Rating Rep Rewards with Hit Rating

I realized after I typed this that it was totally off topic, but since I can't delete it....blah here it is. I was in your place not that long ago and while conventional wisdom says hey I'm 80 I should be able to run heroics now I didn't find this to be true immediately. For me I felt ok walking into a heroics when I could do 1.5K dps. Here's what I did, -Spec destruction - for me it was just the easiet quickiest way to ramp up for heroics. I'm dual spec and I use my second specc to test out other non traditional specs. There are plenty of posts on spell rotation (or prioritization(sp?)) -check out what you can get from rep rewards and quest lines. Since you still have alot of green there should be some quest rewards that can give you hit and spell power. wowhead.com is a great. You can add a filter to search for item rewarded by quests with the stats your looking for. -You don't seem to have any enchants, and your an enchanter. -Run Dallies to get some cash. I earned rep with Edon Blade, Son's of Hodir as much as possible and average 100+g a day. Doesn't seem like alot but it adds up. Use the cash to by AH stuff. Use the gear guide to buy the stuff you can afford now. Also depending on server economy it might be cheaper for you to collect the mats yourself and tip. The argent crusade dallies also have great rewards (at exaclted I believe) and the dallies are another great place to earn gold. -Grab a tabard so your earning rep when your running instances. -You do herbalism so farm stacks of Lichbloom and Icethorn, hold onto the frost lotus as you'll want them for flasks (make friends with a high level alchemist. Right now every 1 flask I have mats for I get 2) -According to your profile you haven't run any 80 level instances. Your in a guild see if guildies will run the daily heroic with you if you aren't comfortable with PUGs. -Normal Trial of Champions is probably the best instance to run for drops in my opinion. Only thing I want to point out is you don't get any emblems. Ok sorry if I spammed you a bit. Hope this helps. SOrry if I was looking at the wrong profile. -Gnomie Last edited by Gnomeobie; September 24, 2009 at 11:16 AM.. Reason: off topic |

Re: Beginner 80 heroics spec
Best thing to do is to buy the pieces for craftable epics. It will not be expensive at all. The mats for a deathchill cloak are very cheap. |

Re: Beginner 80 heroics spec
I dinged 80 a couple of month back with my lock, so I can give you a little bit of recent advice. Tip 1: Decide what spec you're going to play and go ahead and pick the spec. It is true that affliction is probably better with worse gear and destro really shines as your gear improves. Having said that, it is not as though affliction has DPS of X and destro is X/2 in starter gear and reversed at higher gear levels....it is much more subtle...like 10% either way. Bottom line is, if you plan to play destro, go ahead and spec that way -- the experience you get learning the rotation will out-weigh your only slightly less dps. I would, however, strongly suggest taking 3/13/55 rather than 0/13/58 as those 3 points in Suppression are very helpful when gearing up. As is, I felt like I was re-geming things on a weekly basis to stay above the hit cap or to replace hit with SP. Tip 2: Regular ToC is your best friend. Please see the "Freshly Dinged" thread where myself and a few others list out the gear that drops in Regular ToC and heroics. The bottom line is this: There are 6-8 items that are either Best-in-Slot or "near" BiS for a warlock who is doing regular and heroic 5-mans to gear up for raids. As mentioned before, you don't get badges for running normal ToC, you also don't get tabard rep. The upside is you can run it easily 5-6 times per day with the right crew and 90 minutes. You should farm this to death. Tip 3: As mentioned before -- start doing Sons of Hodir dailies for shoulder enchants. Pick up a Kirin Tor Tarard for their rep. Tip 4: Use the AH very sparingly....you're going to replace almost 100% of the crafted stuff that doesnt' require runed orbs while doing heroics. The two pieces that I'd still recommend: Titansteel Spellblade and Deathchill cloak. The spellblade and Deathchill are only replaced by a reasonably low % drop in heroic ToC. You're a tailor so if you have easy access to the mats, make the ebonweave pieces (which I see you've done). Tip 5: Enchant everything. No, really...enchant everything. Tip 6: Be really careful about using best-in-slot enchants or epic gems on/in gear under i213. You will likely replace this gear pretty quickly as you gear up. Use the next step down for enchants and use blue gems until you get better gear and it will make the cost of enchanting and gemming much less painful. Tip 7: Run normal TOC and the easy heroics for a while unless you've got a group that can carry you through harder ones. Heroic ToC is a DPS check (black knight phase 3)....unless you've got dps who can carry this one without you, wait until you've replaced most of those greens with blues and purples (except the wand) before trying heroic ToC. In summary -- normal ToC is your friend. Hope this was helpful. 'dotz
