Ok so I was in A heroic AN group the other day with another lock, and I was putting out about 1.5k DPS and he was putting out more like 2k DPS. We were both full aff. He was mostly in 10 man/25 man raid gear and I am in mostly tailor crafed blues. From what I understand from reading on here, your rotation should be SB, Haunt, Courption, Curse of Agony/CoD, and UA. Then SB till something needs refreshing. Although a very frinedly guy, He was trying to tell me that I should lead off with my instant casts then haunt. I tryed to tell him that that didnt make sence becuase you do more damage with the debuffs active, but he seemed very, for lack of a better word, insistent on me changing my rotation for max dps output. I told him my DPS was lower then his becuase of our gear differences and not becuase of my rotation, but maybe im wrong? maybe I missed a thred about rotations somewhere that expalnes that you should lead with your instant casts? |

Trust the Den. However, if it is a fight where we are moving into position, I cast the instant dots first while we are running. That will actually lower your DPS and increase your total damage done (only by a little bit though). |

Hello ![]() You seem to be doing the right rotaion. On bosses (or long living mobs)I normally go: Sb>>Haunt>>Corr>>Ua>>Curse of Agony then Sb fill, refresh dots and drain soul at 24% while keeping dots up. Doing that rotaion you are getting all on the relivant debuffs you want to get more damage from your Dots etc. You were probably lower just due to gear difference etc, I would'nt get too worried, as soon as get better gear you will see a bigger difference. Affy locks are great on longer boss fight. Heavenshy

Re: Am I doing something wrong?
The difference between opening with haunt and shadow bolt instead of corruption, Curse of Agony and UA is marginal damage wise, but will give slightly higher numbers for DPS since you dont get those first few seconds with only a couple of dots doing damage. It is far more important how you keep up your dots and haunt(high uptime, but no clipping) while getting in as many shadow bolts as possible. Personally, at least for groups where i dont know the tank, i like to start with all three dots since a couple of "unlucky" haunt and shaodw bolt crits can pull from a tank that isnt the fastest at making threat. In any case, as others have pointed out, your rotation isnt why the other lock beat you by 500 DPS. Last edited by Trizone; May 11, 2009 at 09:58 AM.. |

I also agree with above posters that its probably gear related. But i wonder about your talents.... You didn't put the 5 points in ruin only 4... and you have some points in shadowburn and none in demonic power... i think the 20% extra crit damage will help some but the gear should do the rest. I actually think you doing 1500 dps with that gear is not that bad at all.

Re: Am I doing something wrong?
About the talents, I was testing something out, and have not gone back to respec yet, going to take 1-2 points out of grim reach, and put them into ruin and something else |

yeah... get rid of grim reach all together. the increased distance only helps on some fights, and only makes sense if you can pick up grim reach + destructive reach... having range on your dots makes no sense if you can't cast a shadow bolt, and vice versa. personally i would drop your 1 point in shadowburn and place in ruin, drop the 2 points in grim reach and place 1 in ILT, do whatever you want with the other one (personally i put it in destructive reach for increased threat reduction). aside from that, you're on par with your theory... it makes more sense to start with SB + Haunt to get the debuffs up, PARTICULARLY with SB because of ISB because your raid/party may need to benefit from the 5% crit debuff. following that, do whatever you gotta do to get your dots up. oh, and if someone didn't mention... *technically* you should be starting with Life Tap while getting into position. if you haven't already, you need to get Life Tap rank 1 moved down to your speed bar and pop it before you cast in order to get the buffs. in my case, not only do i get the LT buff but the 4 set bonus from t7.5, and sometimes proc dying curse as well - for all these reasons, it makes a lot of sense to hit it first. happy hunting - you'll be blowing by that nub in dps in no time. in 10/25 man gear he should have been doing at least 2.5-2.7k dps in a heroic, not 2k :p edit: p.s. - get cheap enchants on your gear :O |

Oh I do LT pre-cast. I usually pop trinket after the LT too. By then usually Lightweave procs, I think that is the only reason that I can put out 1.5 k dps. another thing that lock said to me was get rid of Glyph of Life Tap, for glyph of courption...but that just sound straight crazy to me. I also changed my spec again, look at armory link. After all the advise. My Hot bar looks as follows except now the the Curse of Agony and UA are switched
