Burn, Baby Burn : A Raiding Guide for Aspiring Destruction Warlocks
This guide has been put together for the Warlock who’s just hit 80 and is looking for a simple, no-frills guide to raiding Destruction. It’s not a guide for your level 10 Blood Elf, nor is it intended to discuss the finer aspects of theorycrafting or min/maxing. If you’re already sporting full Sanctified Dark Coven's Regalia, you’re unlikely to find anything here that you don’t know, but if the prospect of rolling on Azure Cloth Bindings makes you cackle in wicked glee, then you’re in the right place. Everything in this guide is, if not exactly correct, at least not broadly wrong. Follow it till you feel comfortable enough to toss it aside and mentor other up-and-coming Warlocks. What is a Destruction Warlock? A Destruction (aka Destro) Warlock is a Warlock who has chosen his talents primarily from the Destruction talent tree. Typically Destruction Warlocks have at least 51 points in this tree, taking points all the way down to Chaos Bolt. We will talk about different Destruction ‘builds’ (arrangements of talent points) later. This guide will not concern itself with hybrid builds (arrangements of talent points that take fewer than 51 points in the Destruction tree). Destruction Warlocks are like Fire Mages, except whereas Mages played with matches when they were kids, Destruction Warlocks played with fire-spewing demons. That is to say, a Destro Warlock’s damaging spells are primarily fire based (primarily, but not all…) Why raid as a Destruction Warlock? You’re a Warlock and you like to destroy… live the dream. OK… so you like to curse, drain and command demonic minions as well… so what’s different about Destruction? Why become a Destruction Warlock instead of, say, an Affliction Warlock?
What types of Destruction Warlock are there? There are good ones and bad ones (well… evil ones and ‘more’ evil ones), but the vast majority of them will fall into one of two builds: 3/13/55 or 0/13/58 (read: number of talent points in Affliction/Demonology/Destruction). In fact, these builds are actually very similar and are not significantly different in how you play them, they just confer different benefits. 3/13/55: The key to this build are the three points in Suppression that reduce the +hit you need to get from gear to reach the hit cap (more on this later). You actually have a point or two that you can play around with so, whether you choose the extra health you get from Soul Link or the AoE stun of Shadowfury is up to you. All in all, it’s a great choice for Destruction Warlocks who are just starting to raid since it’s unlikely you’ll have the gear you need to be ‘capped’ for… 0/13/58: This is typically a build chosen for higher end raiding. It sacrifices the three points in Suppression in exchange for Improved Soul Leech. This makes sense since at higher levels of raiding, you will have more access to gear with sufficient +hit and can use that flexibility to improve mana-efficiency (and thereby the damage you can do between Life Tap) for you and your raid. When you’re starting out, stick with one of these builds and you’ll do fine. OK, got my spec, now what about Glyphs? There are only four major glyphs you should be interested in as a Destruction Warlock: Glyph of Conflagrate, Glyph of Incinerate, Glyph of Immolate, and Glyph of Life Tap. A lot of smart people with expensive and sophisticated calculators have gone through the trouble of trashing glyphs like the Glyph of Chaos Bolt, so listen to them and stick with the four above. Of the four, Glyph of Conflagrate and Glyph of Incinerate are bread and butter... get them. The choice of Glyph of Immolate or Glyph of Life Tap for that last slot really depends on how far you’ve got along in gearing. Until you get enough Spirit (let's say, around 500...) to make Glyph of Life Tap pay off, stick with Glyph of Immolate. Roughly, if you’re ready to take on the Titans of Ulduar, you’re probably ready for the Glyph of Life Tap. Ironically, with the impending changes to Warlocks with the release of Cataclysm, there tends to be less Spirit on higher level gear, so as you watch your precious Warlock grow into his T10, you might find yourself going back to your Glyph of Immolate roots. Luckily your choice of minor glyphs comes down to a decision whether or not you feel the urgent need to swim like Michael Phelps or set your Eye of Kilrogg free to fly with the birds of the sky. In other words, Warlocks are too powerful to need minor glyphs… besides, they all suck. Gearing your Destruction Warlock: pret-à-porter for pyromaniacs You’ll never go wrong with basic black, unfortunately Triumphant Kel'Thuzad's Regalia only comes in a garish blue/green combo… Très chic it assuredly is not. But it does have some nice accessories like hit, spell power, haste, crit and spirit. If you’ve raided as an Affliction or Demonology Warlock before, you’ll be pleased to know that although the degrees of importance are different, the actual stat priorities aren’t. If you’re just gearing out your Warlock, you’re going to want to focus on a few things in this order:
The ‘Hit Cap’ is the amount of Hit you need to achieve a 0% miss chance. This will change depending on certain factors (ask your buddy the Draenei Shadow Priest why he gets invited to all the raids), but when it comes to the basics, there are really only two numbers you need to be concerned with: 368 and 446. If you are running with the 3/13/55 build above, then you need to bring your Hit Rating to 368 in order not to miss. If you have chosen to run with 0/13/58, then you’re going to need 446. That’s why 3/13/55 is more popular for beginning Destruction Warlocks. Getting that extra 78 Hit rating is the reason many young Warlocks die a little inside when they think of the number of times they had to kill Cyanigosa before Mark of the War Prisoner finally dropped. There are different things you can take (your Draenei buddy is one…) to bring the required hit rating down, but those are beyond the scope of our modest little guide. The Den or WoWWiki will help you on your way. Once you reach the Hit Cap, stop… a -1% chance to miss hits as often as a 0% chance to miss.
In other words, increase in Spell Power is a natural consequence of building up your gear. Higher level gear is more likely to have more Spell Power, so for the most part you’re not going to have to think too much about it. Of course, things get more complicated by the time we get to...
There is no simple, straightforward answer that’s true 100% of the time, but as a rule of thumb, unless the combination of Spell Power and Critical Strike on any one piece of gear is significantly more than the combination of Spell Power and Haste on a piece you’re thinking of replacing, keep the Haste gear. If you’re really determined to get into the math of it, search the Den for discussions on Haste vs Crit, or pop over to the Elitist Jerks Warlock page and lose yourself in the complex calculus of theorycrafting.
Stone Choice: Accessorizing tips for the modern on-the-go Warlock So you've just lifted your first Spectral Kris off of the still smoking cinders of what was formerly the Black Knight. Of course, you're going to want to deck out your shiny new epic with a little bling, but you're wondering what goes best with purple... the searing red of a Firestone or the cool blue of the Spellstone? Well, the 'fire' thing should be a tip off, but we are pretty heavy on the spells too, so... Even though 60 haste definitely wins out over 49 crit, the 1% addition to direct damage spells is too good to pass up when the biggest chunk of your fiery wrath comes from non-periodic spells like Incinerate. A sensible sky blue works for Affliction locks, but be more daring in your accessorizing and go for that Ferrari red Firestone. (And it really sets off your eyes too!) Spell Priority: Destroying things efficiently There is no cow level. There is no “Destro Rotation”. There is, however, an ‘opener’ and a set of priorities. Spells you need to have on your action bar (or keybound if you’re really elite): Immolate, Conflagrate, Chaos Bolt, Incinerate, Life Tap, Curse of the Elements, Curse of Doom and the one spell that you’ll find yourself getting better acquainted with as you gear up : Soulshatter. Let’s start with how you introduce yourself to a boss (and here I mean the poison-cloud-dropping, add-spawning, polarity-shifting kind, not the kind you send your CV to): If you have the Glyph of Life Tap, then use it and give yourself a little SP buff before you start laying on some serious beat-down. If you’re the only Warlock (or if there’s no Moonkin or Unholy DK in your raid), the first thing you cast on the boss should be Curse of the Elements. If you’ve got either of those or if the other Warlock is weaker than you (but of course he is… naturally, he should be casting CoE) then you utter your Curse of Doom. Immolate is second, since it buffs your other fire spells and allows you to hit the unsuspecting mob with Conflagrate, the next spell in your opener (after you do this, you may find yourself reaching for Soulshatter, because it hits hard and fast). A little Chaos Bolt is a nice chaser, followed by Incinerate, Incinerate, Incinerate and more Incinerate. From here, you start working with a system of priorities. Incinerate is your ‘filler’, whenever you can’t cast any other spells or your DoTs are still scorching happily away, you should be casting it. Your first priority are your DoTs : Curse of Doom or Curse of the Elements and Immolate. Keep them ticking, but try not to 'clip' them (don't write over the last tick by casting too early). Ideally, you time your DoT refresh so that your new DoT goes up immediately after the old one fades, but it's better to be a little bit late than a little bit early. If your DoTs are busy doing their damage, then just pop Conflagrate and Chaos Bolt whenever they come off of cooldown. Life Tap enough to keep up your buff if you're using the Glyph of Life Tap, otherwise only do it when you start getting out of mana (or need to move) and only then as often as you need to. The Destuction Warlock's E=MC2: CoE(D)/Immo > Conflag/CB > Incin We all have those days where one boss just isn't enough and you really feel the need to reap serious devastation... If you suddenly find yourself surrounded by a pack of particularly pissed off predators (at least three, please... if you've only got a couple, better just to let your Immolate and Conflagrate combo pop them like burnt popcorn), then despite what the incredibly cool looking cinematic would suggest, don't go Hellfire them all to death (not unless you're partial to a corpse run). Oddly enough, while you would think a spell with a name like Rain of Fire would be the ideal way for a fire-wielding Warlock to bring the pain, these days Seed of Corruption (SoC) actually is the preferred choice. Just tab target your way through anything that isn't dead yet and plant your evil little surprise. SoC is notorious for attracting the unwanted attention of slathering mobs, so watch your aggro carefully and keep one finger on the Soulshatter button... Pet? It's not a Baby Blizzard Bear, it's a minion... You don't take a talent called Empowered Imp if you're going to hang around with your Succubus (well, at least not unless you're trying to impress your friends). The Imp is the pet of choice for Destruction Warlocks and many talents in the two Destruction builds are taken in order to turn him into your own personal fireball machine gun. Not only that, but just having him around gives you Blood Pact, a nice little health buff that allows you to tap away a bit more life for mana. A tip: turn off Phase Shift so that your imp can benefit from all the raid the buffs being passed around, and remember... whatever he says, it is in his contract... he just never read the fine print. The last word Hopefully, this guide will help set you off on the path to Destruction (really, where else could the road to Ruin lead?). There are many more excellent resources out there that can help you as you advance further down that path, including a lot of helpful posts in the Den (even the most evil Warlocks should use the search feature). Have fun playing your Destruction Warlock (till the next nerf) and burn, baby burn. Last edited by fizboz; February 19, 2010 at 05:11 PM.. |

Re: Burn, Baby Burn : A Raiding Guide for Aspiring Destruction Warlocks
ever since i started my lock about 6 mths ago i was into a heave demo build.. but the time came at level 80 when a friend made me do a dul spec and got me to do a secondary destro build... i found myself hapless at the number of new spells anywas i came over here and found this guide and it helped learn new things such as 1. What is a rotation 2. how to use a rotation.. but a question i have 1. After reading this guide i sort of came up with my own rotation i beleive causes more damge. CoE>Immo>CB>Conflgrate>Incin>Incin>Incin>CB>Conflg rate>Incin>Incin>Incin>CB>immo>conflgrate and so on is my rotaion ok because i can get off around 6k-12k dmage per spell but the problem is that after my second conflgrate my immo DoT is not cast till late and i think this casues me to loose more dmge time or soemthing becuase when i use the below mention spec: CoE>Immo>Conflgrate>CB>Incin>Incin>Incin>Incin>rep eat but this way i do less damage and i have to clip my immo spell and right after my fourth Incin my CB is ready ... i am so connfused as to what to do.... |

Quote:
Did you properly read the above section? To emphasize this again: There is no "destro rotation." As you already noticed yourself, any attempt to squeeze the spells in a fixed rotation will make you: - either loose dot uptime or clip your immolate - waste time where one of your cooldown abilities (CB and Conflag) are ready to cast |
