New PC.. Which OS?

Hey guys,
I'm in the process of building a new gaming rig. I was wondering, which OS should I pick up?
XP or Vista?
Do any of you have experience with Vista? Is it stable enough yet? Will I drop $400-$500 on it and have a lot of problems? or can I feel confident enough that it will run WoW with out a hitch? (well I understand nothing runs with out a hitch, but I have enough know-how to tweak any minor problems.)
Or should I just pick up a copy of XP... I want my rig to do me for at least a couple of years, and an OS up-grade is inevitable. But should I wait? or just go ahead and get Vista now.

Thanks for any and all opinions.

Vista equals problems, at least currently. The problems is with the drivers and hardware. Many PC's that are Vista ready are still having issues with add ons and drivers. Much like the Apple commercials the Vista is always asking you for permission to do this and that and it gets really old after awhile. Wait a few more months or at least until A service pack is out.

Yea, Im going to agree with Mav and say wait on it. I have Vista RC2 on an extra pc just so I can play with it, of course Im sure they fixed a few of the issues like the non working ATI drivers on it or it not liking alot of my games.

Definately wait and keep XP for now...this is coming from someone who works with tech support all day. Vista has a lot of compatibility issues right now.

I would say neither, but out of those 2 it would be XP.

I'd reccomend XP. My housemate ran 98 till last year, no issues. If you're only keeping a system for 2 years, it'll work fine. for $400-500 you WILL NOT get a futureproof gaming system that runs cutting edge games tommorow and you won't get a smooth running vista boot. It will buy you a respectable though not awesome XP machine and so... I'd say "hold off on vista all together" OR "spend more on something worthwhile to run vista on and keep it for longer". 64 bit is nice, but at $400 his PC might not have a 64 bit processor after a gig or 2 (I got 2 gig of named brand ddr667 for £60, a steal sadly) of ram and a dedicated graphics card (another $100 for a half decent one) (or the equivalent budgeting in a premade)

Vista has been offically release over 4 months now. The only driver issues you still see out there is on equipment you will likely never see drivers for (ie your 7 year old laser jet printer...)
As for the permissions thing, that's called the User Account Control, and if your half way competent you can turn it off with a few minor changes.
The main problems I see with Vista (and I also work in tech support) are with people trying to run it on a machine that shouldn't even be running xp, let alone Vista. 1 gig of RAM is a must and a dedicated graphics card is as well (although why you would be playing WoW without either is beyond me).
