Re: How women are treated as gamers

I usually always play a female character, even though I'm male. I have my own reasons for it, mainly being I dislike my character looking like it has just taken two thousand bottles of steroids. In addition, I have a female figure in real life; therefore, find it more suitable my character does as well.

Moving on, I joined the guild I am currently in two or three days ago. No one really talked to me, but then I got a random message from one of the guild members. The first thing he asked (I'm assuming 'he'), was, "Would you like to have any bags or gold?" and I politely refuse this offer. We chatted a little bit and I asked for help with finding better mining veins so I could level my mining. He said he'd bring me to the Barrens, and so we went there. Next thing I know, he asks if I'm female. Which he had already stated he was going to leave after bringing me to the Crossroads. As soon as I said, "Truthfully, no." he was all, "I need to go help other guys out, bye."

I found it odd. Do note that I barely tell anyone I am, indeed, male. Then of course there's the issue with teamspeak. I have a feminine, flaming voice (so says all my friends online and offline), which would again bring up the gender issue.

In conclusion, I find that female characters do tend to be treated better than male characters. I had a male main character once before and he never got asked if he wanted anything, or any help.

It would be the best if the Gary Coleman or Harlem Globetrotters cartoons came out on DVD. I remember when Cartoon Network used to play those (back to back) around midnight on Saturday's..Funny stuff.

Sorry this post is off topic, so...... Women are treated differently in the gaming universe, so considering this I'm going to start a human character and run them without any armor into a main city and have them dance for change on a mailbox, and then send it to my real character. Everyone wins.

Re: How women are treated as gamers

An old guild friend of mine was male...always played female characters...later found out he was gay, thought some of my other guildies where female, turned out they were male...no way of telling unless you hear them or they tell you...although I have just realised none of the females have actually posted pictures on the 'Guildies IRL' post =P

If anyone asked me to give them stuff because theyre female id tell them where to go!

Re: How women are treated as gamers

My friend, a guy was running DM on an alt with my alt a cvijafaq's (yeah the one on this forum) alt and he has a night elf female, not a dranei male...

We kept calling him "him" and "he" but the fury warrior we ran with seemed to take offence. Defending his femininity, returning the /flirts (though we did too, all in good fun) and getting jealous when he was blowing some but not all of the party kisses. He was good and articulate enough that he was not immature, but he was clearly younger than us at the same time.

The sort of compliments I give female players are the same I give male ones "you tanked well" "no, your healing was fine, if you messed up twice it was still less than me" "nice DPS" that sort of thing. I find people who compliment people based on what they don't know funny. It's true, my guildies look like their characters (our night elf hunter owns lots of leather too) but not everyone does I'm about three times as tall as you'd expect if you work with that rule :P.

The guild picture thing is funny really. You know how I was talking about my guild and how they weren't biased? Met a load of them this weekend, females included and it was fun. Now that suspicious "No pictures" is quite likely from several things. I suspect your females are (1 or more of) a) Male, b) scared of the guys c) have no respect for them. In my experience if a female realises the guys won't bite most "women" will follow suit and turn out to be female.

Having played an on line game in which you reincarnate regularly (and choose gender) and can have in game sex changes (there's even a trophy for clocking up a large number of changes in one life time) I don't judge by displayed gender.

Honestly, descended from a long line of letches and I still think it's pathetic.

There's also the "no picture" rule when you have some of the creepy guys in your guild. It was amazing after our one "creepy but harmless" guy left how many more pictures got posted

I've played a lot of games and do not recall ever asking anyone there gender.

I'm with Som0. Don't see why it would matter.

Re: How women are treated as gamers

I stumbled across this site, and have been rather thrilled about all the info! I play in a family oriented guild, and haven't had any issues being a RL girl, playing an Undead gal, lol. Yet my roots go back to the days when I was in high school, playing AD&D, live at my friends houses for the weekend.

Anyway, I digress; my boyfriend plays a female character, and I brought my little brother into the guild, and he plays an undead warlock female character, just lik me. For both of their undead females, I found it amusing they both picked the shocked locks.

Have I been treated differently? Not really. I have met other gals, which has been fun. I recall once, when we encouraged an undead guy character, dancing in a Nelf disguise for us - it was fun.

If people toss discrimination my way, I toss it back at them, with a joke in hand. I don't care what anyone's gender, or sexuality is - as long as they are nice people.

Re: How women are treated as gamers

I'm a 27 year old male and I play all male characters with one exception. I recently got my wife to start playing (WOOT!!!), and she wanted the both of us to roll new blood elves together. Once she saw what the male BE looked like, she made me roll a female I don't think the BE males look that bad, but she thinks they look ridiculous. We play those toons together 100% of the time and we don't come across that much stupidity. There are moments though when we come across some nitwit. /Ignore is great for those kinds of people. There was one player that was way out of line with /say comments. We reported him and the GM was very responsive. The player apparantly had been reported for similar behavior before and had his account banned. That's one thing I hadn't seen mentioned in this thread yet. Sexual harrasment (and that's totally what this was in this case) is against Blizzard's acceptable use policy and they will take appropriate measures. As in RL, there's no need to put up with that crap. That being said, most of the time there isn't really any problem. I do play in a "generally" 18+ guild with some really great people, so that may be a big part of it.

Re: How women are treated as gamers

First time poster; hello everyone.

My experience has been somewhat different. My guild, on average, is older than the norm and alot of the juvenile stuff that crosses 'the line' just does not fly there.

My GF plays with me and everyone knows she is a female. Also, we attended a guild gathering this past spring so all of the core membreship have met her and there are pics on our site. No one has ever crossed the line with her in any way, although she probably gets more attention when she logs in than any member in the guild except the GM. We also have a female CL and several couples in our guild so it feels more like a standard demographic of people as opposed to a gamer demographic.

In terms of drama, the worst cases we have seen came from guys in the 18-23 range who were at college and could not balance the new freedom and hard partying that college sometimes becomes.

Semi-related question: Any ladies out there concerned about the new voice system being implemented in relation to pugs and BGs?

Edit: All the purple makes me spell bad!

Re: How women are treated as gamers

We have a pretty old (20 years+) guild, with a lot of females within the age up to 55. Still the normal silliness of male behaviour shows up once a female players enters Teamspeak and the guys stop their tame (imho) sexual innuendo because - as we all know - <irony> all women hate sex </irony>.

In our guild, females have it easier to get help and stuff from other people but this could also be related to the fact that they are normally very generous to start with.

I really just play this in a super PC way, I do not even think about gender of a person unless it really *really* matters.
