Re: You might play like a pro, but can you act like one?

the question i´m asking myself right now: is world of warcraft really THE solution to "spend more time" with his own daughter? she´s 8 years old, she´s a kid and beside her diabetes i guess your daughter can imagine a million other things to do without any problems which she would probably enjoy many times more than wow...

as you said, wow ist played by sooo many different type of gamers that it´s pretty obvious that there will be harassement and rude language. thats why parental guidance is one thing thats quite important. in the EU, wow is rated for ages 12+, dunno bout US.

don't missunderstand me, i don't want to bother you or get off-topic, but what i just wrote came almost immidiatly to my mind when i read your initial posting. all the best to your daughter. i know for myself what it's like to live with a long-term-illness, i suffered cancer as a child (and non of my parents smoked oder drank alcohol), i was just one out of a million who won the great prize ;(

Re: You might play like a pro, but can you act like one?

Thats true the game wasn't created thinking on the youngest ones, but if you don't want to help just don't reply to the chat question, its very simple, like yesterday, i was leveling a alt and a saw a druid in a duel a level 70 duel, and he lost the duel just because he didn't heal him self, i tryed to advise him and tell him some better ways to do someting when he just offend me, i was very surprized as my approatch was very user friendly, but as we all know the world if full of Jerks so is WOW, hope your daughter will be strong and ignore that kind of persons

Re: You might play like a pro, but can you act like one?

to comment once more on the chat question: imho a 8-year-old child is NOT able to clearly differentiate sarcasm, (subtle) irony, cynicism and all the other things that happen daily in wow. therefore i suggest to PERMANENTLY guide your daughter when she`s playing wow since you cant rely that all the jerks out there will behave like you want them to.

i remember (that was in vanilla wow) that some guild organized an online-funeral for one of there guildmates that died IRL. took place in winterspring on a pvp-server. as you surely can imagine, a group of players could not resist and wiped the entire funeral-participants (none of them wearing any damage-gear but cloth-dresses and so on). they frappsed it and of course, the published it. there was a huge discussion going on, of course... and i guess each and everyone of you can tell similar own stories about jerks in wow.

I remember that funeral/massacre too. Crazy stuff.

Anyway. Sorry to hear about your daughter. I'm sure you'll fill her life with all the joys you can. Truth - Wow has plenty of punks, jerks, bullies etc. Hopefully the only permanent thing this incident does is to prompt you and your wife to better protect your daughter from that filth with the functions the designers have put in place (that have been mentioned already). Wish you all the best.

Re: You might play like a pro, but can you act like one?

Unfortunately I found out the hard way on this game 'never ask a question'. As my Warlock is my only character and first, but its awful the way people behave on wow I call them 'Keyboard Hard Nutz'.
I have 2 players 1 I work with and the other is a fellow guild player that we both clicked with. They a have both been playing for a while and have multiple 70 characters. If either of them is not on line I wait or don't bother.
A testament to the level of idiocy on WoW I have sum 47 names on my ignore list due to thier thuggish responses.

But it saddens me to think that one 'prat' can spoil an 8 yr olds gaming as well as others.

Happy Gaming

Re: You might play like a pro, but can you act like one?

WoW is rated Teen for a reason. The profanity filter can only do so much to limit what a young child sees in chat.

Personally, I have issues with young children being allowed to use the Internet in any capacity unless they are being supervised.

Becomes someone didn't want or take your unsolicited advice, they are a jerk? Right. Not everyone appreciates a complete stranger sticking their nose in to tell them how they should be doing things, especially when there may have been aspects of the duel you didn't even know about. Like "no healing" perhaps?

I'm 49 and use the profanity filter for myself! I't not unusual for my kids to come up and look over my shoulder why I'm playing. They don't need to see the kind of garbage that comes across chat.

Re: You might play like a pro, but can you act like one?

As said previously, we are all in agreement that chat is for those who can handle all the immature idiots out there. However, I do take the time to let those who offend me know silly they must be to be virtual morons. Fortunately, my server seems to be populated by a majority of well-adjusted gamers. The few times I've had to flame anyone was well deserved and almost always I received an apology. Don't assume that they can't be taught, and give them the opportunity to recant or at least feel embarressed. I also applaud your efforts to include your daughter in your gaming. Hope she prospers and kills lots of little animals!
