Re: Any oldschool RPGs?

I'm heading overseas for a while and just installed Fallout 1 and 2 on my computer. Haven't played them in ages and looking forward to it.

I really enjoyed Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2. While not up to the level of Torment, they are really good, reminded me of Baldur's Gate, which I also liked a lot.

Sometimes I miss feeling like I have a real impact on the world. It always breaks my heart in a way when I slay some evil demons up to evil, as demons do, and five minutes later they respawn.

Re: Any oldschool RPGs?

When I want a solid solo experience I find nothing beats the original Neverwinter Nights. Love that game.

That sounds like an exact description of the Avernum games. The graphics are old school, but the combat is a blast, and kind of reminiscent of WoW. You send your warriors out front to tank, the priest heals, mages nuke, etc. My favorite is Avernum 2. You can get a demo at http://www.avernum.com/avernum2/index.html

Check out Arcanum: of steamworks and magics obscura.

Maybe not the best of games technically speaking, but -atleast to me- it has a tremendous atmosphere and storytelling.

Shadowrun was great (For Sega AND SNES) ,.. to bad they murdered the game for windows Vista.

Some old school RPG's I enjoyed were: Secret Of Mana, Chrono Trigger, FF3/FF7, Persona, Dragon Warrior.. bleh the list could go on but whatever.

Re: Any oldschool RPGs?

Basically anything made by Squaresoft for NES/SNES is worth checking out.

Phantasy Star series for Genesis is great, especially parts 4 and 2 (hardest game in the world but awesome storyline).

I've tried some Japanese translations on emulator that have been kinda cool. Fire Emblem 4 and Romancing Saga 3 were both fun.

The old Dragon Warrior games for NES are classics.

Re: Any oldschool RPGs?

as Newfie said, anything by Squaresoft for NES/SNES fits your description.

One of my personal favorites that hasn't been mentioned (and deserves to be!) is Mario RPG for Super Nintendo. It had great graphics for the time (very mario-cartoon classic style), lots of "easter eggs", a classic story, and a lot of other nice gameplay features.
