The NPD Group, a market research company, has released some information on the online play habits of gamers, and confirmed that PC and Mac gamers are still the largest group of online gamers. To study online gaming behaviors, on June 3, The NPD Group e-mailed surveys to 15,700 gamers (both male and female) aged 18 to 44 and 3,300 teens (more male than female) age 13 to 17. On June 21, the survey closed with 39% of those surveyed responding. The responses were then weighted to evenly represent gamers age 13 to 44.
Of the gamers surveyed, 10% only played mobile games, while 90% played on the Xbox, Playstation 2 and PC or Mac (which were lumped together). Of the latter group (console and computer users), 60% reported playing online, although many console gamers admitted to using their PC or Mac to game online. The study also determined that respondents played online games on the PC 60% of the time, compared to online-capable console owners who played online games 40% of the time.
The NPD Group study noted that across all platforms, gamers averaged playing online games 6.1 hours per week, and offline games 5 hours per week.
