Re: Decent CPU/Mainboard Combo for WoW?
I got vista home basic for one, mainly because I don't care about those extra features. Some might call it a glorified XP, but I am fine with that. Just in case I had XP that I could install, but I didn’t need to. As for customization, I immediately removed ALL non windows start up options with the exception of obvious MS and nvidia ones. Any widget, etc. for removed from the list. That cr*p brings back bad memories of IE 4.0 active desktop anyway. The job of an OS is to interact the hardware and software to run my apps, I don’t care about windows features.
I then went to the manufacturer websites and got the most up to date drivers for all of my hardware. I then checked the web. I have been using this site in the past, you can do some of the stuff in vista as well: http://www.tweakxp.com/performance_tweaks.aspx for vista, http://www.tweakvista.com has served me well. That, and with 2 GB of memory minimum, vista isn’t bad once you strip out the useless cr*p. If you buy an OEM pc, I’d highly recommend a clean install of the OS only, NO extra software like the trial cr*p that comes pre-loaded (equivalent of electronic ****roaches). Software wise, if you see anything from Norton remove it immediately! I had Norton 360 hose my old computer, all ran OK, but when I emptied a 15 GB recycle bin nothing ran right, no matter what I did. Sad thing is I still have a subscription to it that should be expiring in a few months. Spyware? Antivirus? http://free.grisoft.com/ - avg is nice because it’s setup and forget about, which I like. I dislike McAfee as well because of their bloatware. Windows defender seems OK, but I heave been using this for years: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html spybot is excellent. Lastly, get winzip. Even uncompressing lttle wow mods take forever. The built in ZIP app vista uses is slow and inefficient. |

Re: Decent CPU/Mainboard Combo for WoW?
I recently helped my girlfriend update her machine. I think an intel chipset, dual core processor and a nice PCIe video card is the way to go. I am so jealous of her system now.
As far as Vista... yeah, stick with XP if you can. I am currently testing the release candidate for Vista's first service pack (should be out in a month or so i think) and even with its "fixes" its incredibly slow. I really dont see a reason to move from XP to Vista at this point... especially with XP getting service pack 3 around the same time Vista gets SP1. Just my thoughts. |
