Re: What do you play WoW on?

Well I wound buying everything to build my own.

AMD Athalon 64 x2 5200
2gb DDR2 667
160 gb HD
Geforce 8600 GT 512mb

On a quick test through UC it's about a million times better than my old stock HP.....
What a difference, I'm seeing a whole new game. I cranked up everything and it's amazing to me. I had it all turned to the lowest settings before, I never knew I was missing so much.

Re: What do you play WoW on?

I just built a new computer. It's pretty overkill for WoW probably.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.66ghz
RAM: 2048mb 800mhz DDR2
GFX: E-VGA Geforce 8800 GTX 768mb DDR3
MBO: Asus P5N-E SLI

with case and all it only cost me about $1200 I think. But I already had the monitor, keyboard, etc.

and

New stock MBP 15.4" w/ 2 GB RAM

Runs like a champ on both - Apple Refurbished store FTW.

Re: What do you play WoW on?

Great thread. I usually build my own. I had been playing on an Athlon 3000, 2 Gb of RAM, using the best AGP card I could find. Could not get above 10 FPS in raids. Tried both GeForce and Radeon cards, couldn't get above that level, even with all graphics turned all the way down. Ever try to fly to a TK instance with zero terrain distance?

Decided to upgrade:
Athlon X2 4600 - under $100
2 GB DDR2 RAM - under $80
PCIx Motherboard - under $80
160 GB SATA HDD - under $60
EVGA 512MB GeForce 8800 GT - around $300

All told, around 600, not including shipping, taxes, etc. I only got a 160GB HDD because I keep my data on a seperate HDD, still on old fashioned ATA, but not worried about that. I install OS and programs on the SATA drive, leaves me free to wipe the OS drive if things get ugly and not lose any data.

I now average 50 FPS in the world, and 20-30 during high excitement times in 25 man content. This is with all graphics turned up. I am slowly adjusting the graphics down just a notch or two, but so far have left them all pretty much at max. If you are comfortable in building your own, this or a similar build will do wonders for your WoW experience. Specifically, the 8800GT cards are just amazing for the price. You get near top of the line performance for 1/2 the price.

Honestly, with graphics cards what you pay is what you get. I've got a HD2900XT and I guarantee it out performs the GT, however, it also cost me equivalent of $50 more. Money spent > brand IMO. If you want to go all out a geforce ultra will bring the boys to your pixellated yard. But it'll cost ya.
