Gary Gygax dead at 69 :(

Dungeons & Dragons Co-Creator Dies at 69

A sad day for fans of role-playing games: The man who co-created Dungeons & Dragons is dead.
Gary Gygax died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva, Wis. His wife Gail says the 69-year-old had been suffering from health problems for several years.
Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.
It's considered the grandfather of fantasy role-playing games and has inspired legions of adoring fans. Gygax's wife says he always enjoyed hearing from them.

Re: Gary Gygax dead at 69 :(

Revolutionary Genius. Must have been great times coming up with the different rules/characters/enemies and structure of the game. And I bet it was all done from a basement somewhere between reality and fantasy.

"I would like the world to remember me as the guy who really enjoyed playing games and sharing his knowledge and his fun pastimes with everybody else."-G.G.

"I'm very fond of the Medieval period, the Dark Ages in particular. We started playing in the period because I had found appropriate miniatures. I started devising rules where what the plastic figure was wearing was what he had. If he had a shield and no armor, then he just has a shield. Shields and half-armor = half-armor rules; full-armor figure = full armor rules. I did rules for weapons as well."-G.G

pretty much the start of it all. I wonder what dragon he's on his way to slay right now.

Sad to see a great pioneer go, lots of great gaming memories thanks to him. Still have my pizza-stained, signed 1E PH tucked away some where.

Some great memories with friends sitting around in my basement with books, dice, papers, and pop cans strewn everywhere, gaming and laughing until the early hours of the morning. D&D is what kept my close circle of friends close from middle school all the way through college and beyond.
