Games promoting cheating?

So I managed to get my hands on The Sims 2 (which those that read my blog already knew) and was showing the boyfriend how it all worked etc. One thing that he pointed out, which I had also noticed, that as a sim with romance as their main motivation, the game really didn't encourage being faithful. With wants like "Have to loves at the same time" or "make out with 3 different sims" you have to wonder what sort of example the game is setting to those more young of mind out there.

It appears though, that The Sims 2 isn't the only game like that... I was reading the sites I visit today and came upon a game write up for Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude. Basically in this game you have to "woo" as many girls as you can...

Quote:
One nice thing about the game's structure is that you're rarely tied to one girl (well, at least not literally). New girls to pursue are generally unlocked in groups of three, but you usually need to clear only two of them before the next set opens up. This leaves you with choices like: should you chase after Harriet, the marching band member with a thing for the school's mascot, or Luba, the party girl itching for her next five-some? Do you pursue Tilly, the all-business redhead who manages the local sorority, or Beatrice, your hot human sexuality professor with a pet monkey and a brain-switching device?
As someone mature enough to just enjoy these games for what they are, games... it doesn't bother me too much, but I do worry about those that are a little younger and what they really do take away from the game. Don't worry, I'm not going to turn into one of those "Games are effecting our children" but I guess I am surprised that games do so openly promote having more than one 'lover' at a time :?

the Leisure Suit Larry games have always been about getting as the most amount of sex/women possible. these games have a long heritage of perversion stemming way back to CGA graphics. :D

of course not. but that's why a game like Leisure Suit Larry gets slapped with a Mature rating. there are only two ways to protect kids from content like that. either make a system to keep kids away from those games (ratings, PARENTS) or forcably keep that kind of content out of games.

people are going to make these kinds of games whether they are morally right or not. the key is to make sure these games only get played by the target audience and not the impressionable people. 8)

The Sims 2 has a rating of Teen :
Quote:
Teen (Content suitable for persons ages 13 or older.)
Also, I may not be an impressionable young person that is likely to turn around and tell my boyfriend "See, she can do it so it must be ok", I can honestly say that it is one aspect that ruined the game for me... even if I did find the want to "Woo Hoo in a public place" amusing.

I'm not a prude, I love when my Human in WoW is practically naked running around, I think the Night Elf dance is fantastic... but I'm not about to sprout long ears and go running around in boots and a bikini casting spells.... ;) I just personally feel that condoning cheating in a game is slightly different as that is a huge aspect in real life, something that a lot of people (if not everyone) has faced at some point in their lives or know someone who has.

When I was younger and more naive I didn't think the "cheating" was a rampant as it really is. Sadly as I got older and got to know more people socially I found that its almost a normal core human thing. I'm never surprised now when I find out someone is cheating on someone I know or whatnot.. Not as much as I was when I was a kid.

I also still don't condone it for myself, but I've found I'm not so against it as I was either. The games didn't do it for me though, it was the meeting of people that desensitize me more so. If anything games have shown me abit of what things are, its really the core of the person *imo* that will tend to lead them into what they consider right and wrong in that aspect. By core I mean what was instilled upon them from parents and environment.

I'm still in that fiercely against it category... if a friend comes to me wanting an alibi because they are cheating I will refuse to assist them. Granted I won't go running to the person being cheated on to tell, but I will play no part in helping.

You all don't want to hear me drone on about my past, but I can say with 100% truth I have never, nor will ever cheat, and really, I don't want to in a game either. I found it amusing in the sims the first time around as I was purely doing it for fun... I even made a male to see how many girls he could pull... but I won't be doing that every day in game and will in fact avoid the "romance" aspiration purely for that reason... I will go knowledge or career.

Leisure Suit Larry doesn't really concern me as far as encouraging unfaithfullness. The reason is that it is aimed at a "mature" audience and will definately have a mature rating. Also he's not in a relationship I don't believe so he has no one to cheat on. Games like this I think most people play for the humor aspect of it more than the sexual part imo.

I was very surprised however when I started playing the Sims 2 and found that the romance encouraged you to have more than one lover. Sure we see it on tv all the time and hear about it among friends and everything but none of that is actually encouraging you to cheat on someone.

If it was a mature audience that the game was targeted at then it'd be no big deal to me. The fact is that a large number of the people who play this are under 16 or so and thats who the game is aimed at. The first one was different imo because it wasn't a goal of the game to have multiple relationships. Sure you could and it was funny to see them get mad about it but the game almost forces you to do it if you play any character that chooses the romance aspiration.

However in their defense I think that they meant for those characters to be played out as bachelors and bachelorettes and not actually be involved in serious relationships but i haven't played the romance aspiration so I don't really know.
