Any Magic The Gathering players?
Was just wondering if anyone plays Magic?
My best friend has gotten me playing Magic The Gathering and I know next to nothing about the game. He is teaching me but If there are some Magic players here at The Den, do you have any recommendations on some web sites for advice, tips, and deck building(other then Magic.com). I currently run an all green Elf deck. |

Re: Any Magic The Gathering players?
I played a LONG time ago - I think Weatherlight had just come out when I stopped playing but to that point I was an avid collector/player. My last memory of a tournament is running a black/red Necropotence deck while my friend used a green/white Wrath of God/Armageddon type thing.
I sold everything not long afterwards but I had complete sets of Ice Age, 4th and Revised edition, Visions, Fallen Empires, Mirage, Weatherlight, Homelands, Legends, then a smatterying of rare cards for Type 1 play (and yeah, I had a Lotus). Was fun while it lasted and while I've been a Tabletop roleplay fanatic since I was about 12 this marked my first departure into "games" rather than "roleplaying" (with the possible exception of a few boardgames prior to that). |

Re: Any Magic The Gathering players?
I play Magic: the Gathering paper-based and also have a logon to the Magic: Online site too - it's been a while since I played though!
I quite enjoyed playing a green/red deck - you can really stack up the direct damage thru those two colours, I got a bit put off when they brought out the Myrridin set because it seemed to make it really easy to get massively powerful cards out very quickly. Another nice deck (if you're playing such as all-elf, or tribal decks) is all angels - people really hate all those flyers! |

Re: Any Magic The Gathering players?
The biggest fun i found in Pentagramm-Fights:
Five friends, sitting in a circle, Each has to kill the two which sit at his opposite and can support only those which set next to him. The one who first kills his two opposites wins. Funny enough that you and your opposites have the same allies as those sit next to you as well as to them ![]() Always played Black/White Decks and loved it - Resurrection and animate Dead in one deck can be so annoying to others.... Well, i sold all my cards long ago for good money as i had many real old rares, but you can easily download all cards from the Inet, print them, then glue them on some strong paper - the result is good enough to play with friends and costs basically nothing. |

Re: Any Magic The Gathering players?
I always came back to various mono-black decks ... hand / land destruction, graveyard recursion (nether shadows and ashen ghouls). Since I started playing WoW a year ago, I haven't touched MtG at all. Still got my cards though and have no intention of getting rid of them as it is an excellent game.
The Wizards site is an excellent resource. I used to visit the StarCityGames site for information as well. |

Re: Any Magic The Gathering players?
I was just talking with some old friends about this today. I played heavily in high school, and stopped after graduation. I was the evil hand destruction guy, the nasty big wurm guy, and also the one with 4x Nevinyrral's Disk.
I got back in right around Mirrodin, and started getting into type 2. A friend of mine actually tried to break onto the pro tour, and I could consistently beat him. Problem was, I was missing about 75$ worth of cards for that particular archetype deck that I didn't want to spend the money on. Got out when I realized that everything I had invested in that cycle was about to be illigal in the popular format. I still have my wurm deck and my black hand destruction together, as well as my baby, a red/black reanimator deck. I've actually got a limited/banned sideboard for it for the odd anything goes tournaments. Usually good for an evenings entertainment and an easy $50. |

Re: Any Magic The Gathering players?
glossary:
event - series of tournaments (over a 3 day period in this case) tournament - series of games played to determine a winner (generally there will be many of these during an event) Well my suggestion to learn how to play (or how to play better) is join an event. there are release tournaments all over the world for the new set for the next three days, visit the event finder on magicthegathering.com at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x...ts/releases-na to find an event near you. generally for events this size there will be multiple types of play, all based on the new set and with entry fees ranging from $15 for drafts to $27 for a sealed tournament. A key note I had wished I had known when I first started participating in tournaments, "Unless it is a preconstructed tournament you can NOT use your own cards" and there will be no preconstructed tournaments as part of this event, you also cannot use the cards you now own from your previous tournaments in a new one, your entry fee pays for the cards you will be playing with. Hope to see you sometime over the weekend. I will be playing in Boulder, CO Friday at Time Warp Comics and Saturday at Karliquin's. BTW midnight madness starts at midnight tonight that is the first moment that the event starts. EDIT: fixed a few places where i transposed tournament/event EDIT2: I may just be playing both nights at Karlquin's EDIT3: Oops got a lil ahead of myself fixed my days to correctly reflect what days the event starts and where to find me. Re: Any Magic The Gathering players?
I played this a LONG time ago as well. I had mostly 3rd/4th/5th edition cards and a couple 2nd editions as well. Ball lightning is beautiful. I used to play with some friends from high school. One of which made a deck we labeled "the anus deck" because he was such an *** with that deck. It was nothing but counter spells and direct damage. he would stop you from doing anything then turn around and whittle you down 1 point at a time.
