Re: Anyone going to try Spore?

There's been a lot written about the Amazon ratings recently - it's all due to the DRM, something like 20,000 people rated the game one star before it was even released all because of the DRM.

Re: Anyone going to try Spore?

I pirated it for that same reason :/

It's a sad world we live in when the pirated version of a game is the one without the rootkit in it.

Re: Anyone going to try Spore?

I wish I had of known about it before I bought the game. I wasn't reading up on it as much towards the end (too busy) so wasn't aware of it. Just as I didn't know until this week that you can only install the game 3 times per purchase... better hope my computer doesn't blow up!

Not very happy. If I had of known about those things prior to purchase, I would have thought about it some more...

Re: Anyone going to try Spore?

I tried the game and, to be honest, it only lasted my around 2 hours. The first stage is a kids game, the second stage is the most interesting by far (still not worth the game), the third stage is way too easy and simple and last stage is complicated at first and boring as hell after 30 minutes.
Gave it another try 2 days after, starting from scratch and have the same impression.

Button line, im my opinion, the game has a lot of advertisement around it, mostly due to their creatures creator program (that is without a doubt, the most fun and revolutionary part of the game), but the concept doesn't deliver. I was disappointed.

Re: Anyone going to try Spore?

Yeah, I also heard about this afterward. However Spore is the kind of game that I can get into quickly, spend lots of time in, and just as quickly burn myself out on it after playing it just a few times. I have a feeling I wont need the 3 installs they gave me.

On top of that I keep having issues with the game. The first being that I cannot create a shortcut to the game. When I try to run the game via a shortcut on my desktop or start menu, i get an error. I tried looking up the error in the support forums and several people have it, the solution is to reinstall the game (thus eating up one more activation out of the 3 you start with). If I run the game from the games folder, it loads without any problems. I also noticed that when I start a game, all the graphic options I setup previously are reset. It defaults to the lowest graphic settings at 800x600 full screen view. I prefer having it in a window mode (though it only gives me a 800x600 window regardless of the resolution i set) with higher visual settings. So every time I start the game, I have to go into the options and set it up.

I did hear that you could call EA after you've used your 3 up to get more, but that EA takes the initial stand that you've stolen the game rather than that you're a legitimate paying customer. This will probably be the last EA game I do buy.

Re: Anyone going to try Spore?

i have mass effect so i already knew about it... but like ME i also knew i won't replay it much...

if it helps now, EA is currently including this DRM on basically every new game they push out. the latest game to get this treatment is Red Alert 3... given how i've just recently reinstalled some classic RTS game, having a limited install on RA3 is not something i can live with so that's one game i won't buy.

yes you can call EA... and I have since ME installer was actually kinda screwed up so i had to reinstall it 4 times ( initial install and post patch bugs) ... basically EA customer service treats you as criminal who's stolen a game... I found it frustrating dealing with them... and this is bearing in mind that it costs over $2 per minute for the call for Australian customers

The first 4 stages are an enjoyable distraction, but nothing amazing, the only stage with any depth is the final stage, rather than trying from scratch you might have wanted to stick with it long enough to try the whole game. The space sim part is pretty good, nothing is horrendously deep or complicated though the space stage comes a lot closer. It's keeping me busy but contrary to the previous stages it does go on a bit.

Spore, by no means a bad game, but way short of it's hype. The space stage is the only good part on gaming merits though the culmination of the other phases is pretty nice.

Staying on the fence on DRM. I hate the concept but I don't intend to reinstall if I can help it. DRM is the reason I shun apple and while I made an exception for spore, I will double careful with EA in future.

Well, I've generally kept away from EA due to the line of policy they keep... I feel like me, the costumer, is something you may consider thinking about after you earned your money, but mostly just decide to screw with .

I'm really saddened that RA3 is going to have this install dump on it as well, since it is one of the few EA games I've been considering buying . Also if it is anyway near what the old versions are, then it will be a game I would want to install many years after, also on my 4th and 5th pc after the game was bought...

Maybe fans of such a game should make a club called "We re-install every monday" and do just that . Would be interesting to see how many times a couple of million players calling in every monday to get an extra installation would have to do so to change this stupid idea some bloke at EA got while smoking something not quite legal.

PS: I love the way Valve did it with their games, and I simple cannot see why EA didn't just copy this way of doing it!? Steam works, and it keeps on working... hell, you can even loose your copy/have the disc get to old and just download the game from your account!

EDIT: Talking about discs getting old, am I the only one who generally seem to have problems with EA-discs going very bad - giving a lot of problems trying to install a game that is a couple of years old (I have had this problem with cd's from RA games, C&C games, DUNE games... and a couple more that I cannot remember the name of right now - having to try and install 3-4 times at worst before succeding)

Re: Anyone going to try Spore?

i bought the first decade box set thing for my CnC games... even tho i already own a copy of the originals... yea over time the CDs just starts failing...

for everything else I've basically redownloaded the game.

personally I like what blizzard has done. you can buy the game in store, but by attaching it to your blizzard account, if you disc fails or you lose it... you can download the game again.

Steam is ok but with hard data caps enforced in Australia and New Zealand ( and other countries in the world i guess ) I can't really see it taking off. I'm sitting on a generous 40gig cap per month while most of my friends are sitting on 10 to 20gig... most games these days are over 5gig in size. basically chews up a chunk of your data usage in less then a week or however long it takes you to download.
