WD Velociraptor 10k rpm

i'm a little excited right now, i just ordered a 150GB Velociraptor. yeah!!
i've been wondering for some time just how much it will improve my boot and load times.
i should have it tomorrow and load the OS this weekend.
is anyone interested in me doing some type of comparison?
what exactly would be a good comparison to do?
use HD Tune? time the WOW load screen?

anyone else run a Raptor?

Re: WD Velociraptor 10k rpm

Nice! I've got two two of the older 74 gig drives in a raid stripe, and it was definitely an improvement over a single 7200rpm drive I'd had previously. I did it to improve load in for all the FPS's I used to play. For example, in the Battlefield series I'd load in so fast I could have a flag turned before anyone else was even on the map yet. ;) Unless of course the server had a delay start, which defeats the purpose.

HD tach will give you the write speeds and all that, but a lot of those are already published on the net. A WoW load up would be interesting though, not sure I've seen that.

Congrats!

I have a 150GB raptor and noticed that WoW loaded quite a bit faster than before.

Umm, aren't the new 1-1.5TB drives actually faster than 10k rpm raptors? I remember that if discarding synthetic tests then even the 500/750G ones got on par with them thanks to very high density platters leading to high performance.

Really? i'll have to look into that.

so, my install went fine. Vista installed in 13 minutes. i was happy about that. daily use is improved, boot up times, programs loading, just generally feels quicker. i'm happy w/ it so far.
however, my old Vista install had been highly customized and i just haven't had the time to redo all those little changes. or remember all that i did. lol so, i bet i've got a decent margin of error when comparing the new drive to the old one. and room for improvement, hopefully.

but anyway, to the point.
the Velociraptor has not really helped the load times of WOW on my system. i recorded the time it took to get to each screen. i performed 10 runs on each drive. these are the averages.

Old: WD 320GB Caviar SE16 7500rpm

press play to log in screen: 7s
log in to character selection: 2s
character selection to zone in: 11s

New: WD 150GB Velociraptor 10krpm

press play to log in screen: 4s
log in to character selection: 2s
character selection to zone in: 11s (this is the number i'd like to reduce. this may be limited by server?)

So, if WOW is the only reason you're looking at this drive, look elsewhere. unless you just have to have that 3 seconds.
But for everything else, this drive is great. i'm really liking it.

I've had one for a while now. I love it. My next step will be Solid State.

And yep, I only need one. All my crap is on my USB Drive.

Keep it clean, it runs better.

Grats!

Re: WD Velociraptor 10k rpm

Funny update:

I left the midnight release for Wrath of the Lich King with my friend. He gets home about 10 minutes before me. As I start my install, I get a text from him saying he's at 93% done.
A few minutes later, I'm done w/ the install and patch and I'm watching the introduction movie. I text him that the movie is awesome. He says, "I'm still updating".
haha
So glad I switched to the Raptor. lol
