I also can stand by spinright for harddrive utilitys they are pricy but proven.
Yes. Spinright is simply awesome as hard drive utilities go. If you had access to it, I would definitely say run this on your drive.

Re: Sudden Performance Issues.

Thanks again everyone. I've checked some of those websites out and they seem to have some very useful utilities.

As I mentioned earlier, I've replaced the Hard Drive and the issue seems to be resolved. However, I now seem to have another issue. I've noticed that in game, every 10 seconds or so everything seems to lag for just a moment then it goes back to being fine.

When Warcraft was closed, I opened the Task Manager, clicked on performance, then opened the Resource Monitor, I noticed this on the network Window.

Now, while WoW was open, I began to watch for the small lag spikes. Sure enough, the WoW lag spikes match up with those little spikes you see on that graph. The problem is, I can't seem to see what is causing those spikes. I assume it is some sort of background program that is pinging the internet. I don't know if its windows update looking for new updates or one of the various other programs that like to check to ensure it's up to date. I am confident that it is not malware or spyware. This is a new Windows Install on a brand new hard drive.

When I click on the Network tab under the graphs, I see a lot of gibberish. under the Image column it lists items like "World of Warcraft" "svchost.exe(LocalService)" "winss.exe" and "System".

If it's important or not, this Vista install is now running the 64bit version. The previous hard drive had the 32bit.

Any idea how i can clear out the extra internet usage on my machine so that those little spikes don't interfere with my gaming? Thanks again, in advance, for your very informative and prompt replies. I'm sure that regardless of weather your advice helps me or not, it will help somebody else reading this too.

Re: Sudden Performance Issues.

Those little lag spikes look like either a program performing some sort of call home function (and possibly failing; networking in windows that is timing out can cause your entire system to hang while it waits for a response) Alternatively, given those spikes, that looks more like some data is being regularly sent/received. (sending of data is more likely to impact your connection by saturating the outgoing bandwidth rather than receiving data)

Do these spikes only happen while playing WoW? It may be one of your add-ons is synchronising data through the system channels (e.g. Cartographer performing automatic syncs with guildmates) and this is causing the issue.

Actually, no they don't. That graphic I put up was when WoW was closed. I then opened WoW up to verify that those spikes are matching up with those short lag spikes I saw on the graph.

I agree that it is something "calling home", However I can't seem to pin point what that might be. My IT friend from work suggested installing Zone Alarm to monitor the incoming and out going traffic, however Zone Alarm doesn't work on 64bit systems.

Yeah, that seems to be showing the same thing as the Resource Monitor I mentioned does. Only with a left side bar.

I'm still not sure what is causing these intermittent spikes on my network. I have Verizon Fios, and I went into the web utility and turned off the wireless antenna to see if perhaps there is some other device interfering. I also Unplugged the other wired device using the router. So in essence, my computer was the only thing connected and those spikes were/are still there.

Re: Sudden Performance Issues.

I had the same prob. I discovered it was the latest version of questhelper (0.70 or something like that). If you have that version, try reverting back to version 0.67 (still Wrath of the Lich King friendly) Worked fine for me.

I think this is different as the network spikes occur when Warcraft is turned off (see the screen shot i posted).

Re: Sudden Performance Issues.

Sorry pernicious i just went through the same thing it is no fun, i used to use ad aware and spy blocker that are very good by lavasoft but i think they started to charge for the utilitys . has some good stuff for checking tcp ip raw sockets and the like if you navagate to the shields up section .I hope this hasent strayed off course but it is a good site to check if you really have virus protection or not. Like i said every problem i have had in cases like this has been a media player app. on another note ,there is a support page for 3d cards Blizzard Support and is helpful for a change. good luck loc
