New System
Hey guys with the Holidays coming up I was thinking of buying myself a new system. I began the Process today by getting a new Monitor 22in widescreen Acer for $150 I thought that it was a pretty sweet deal and figured that I have to start somewhere. So heres what I have and what i want. AMD Ath 64x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.0 GHz 1 Gig RAM Radeon X800XL 256 mb Graphics card Thats the Base of the System. I want to get a Pretty Decent upgrade but I only have $800.00 to spend Background on me I was a Tech years ago but have been out of the Business for about 6 years so im not up on all the new stuff. So while i can Build a system from scratch I have no idea what I'm Buying anymore and im Terrified that I would go buy the parts and forget something simple IE. power cord or screws youknow what i mean I dont have access to my old shop anymore and I live inthe boondocks so its not just a quick trip for me to go pick up stupid mistakes. Saying that I would rather buy a complete System ready to go but if someone outlined Everything that I would need to Purchase via New Egg or something like that i have the Technical Knowledge to put it together just not to purchase it. I hope that all makes sense. By the way I will be Scrapping this system actualy giving it to my GF so she can have one of her own to play on. So I can't just pull parts from here. ps. I really only use the Comp for WoW. Thank you all so much /Huggles Would Something like this work well? This powerful entertainment machine from Acer features an energy-saving low power AMD Phenom X4 9100e quad core processor. $699.99 ![]() Order Today, Ships Today Manufacturer: Acer

Re: New System
Just to let you know, this is a special going on. Upgrade the video card and you have a better system for what you are willing to pay HP AMD Phenom X4 Quad-Core System $599.96 at Best Buy Retails not on sale for over $1099 Notebook computers seem to sop up the majority of attention on Black Friday, but this happens to be one powerful and well-accessorized desktop for the money. Under the hood, you'll find a AMD Phenom X4 Quad-Core processor clocked at 2.2GHz, 6GB of DDR2 memory, and a 640GB hard drive. Add to that a 21.6-inch display and Canon inkjet printer, and you have $1089.96 worth of PC for almost half the price.

Re: New System
I just burnt out a 939 socket, same stats as yours. What motherboard/socket combo are you choosing. Heat could be a problem. I have dropped Radeons in favor of a Nvidia Geforce 6200 Current: AMD 64 3000+ (single cpu) Msi Nvidia Geforce 6200 1.25 gb ram I'm avoiding dual core cpu for the moment, unless you have a Am2 socket. The 939 are way too hot. Cheers Reak |

Re: New System
If you're willing to build your own, head over to Mwave and get a motherboard bundle. (I run an AMD Phenom x4 9850.) Figure $75 for a CPU, $40 for RAM, $100 for a motherboard. Video card, probably something in the $150 range (GeForce 8800 GT 512MB is a good buy). A good case is the Antec Sonata for $110, which comes with a good power-supply. Vista Home Basic is $80, or you can get Vista Ultimate for $180 and have the rights to downgrade to XP Pro. Shipping is about $50. You could probably reuse your existing hard drive / dvd if you have, otherwise $50 for a HD and $25 for a DVD. But the big advantage of DIY builds? When things break, you'll know how to fix them (especially re-installing the O/S). Or else you'll learn that it's well worth the $40 for Acronis TrueImage or other backup tools. If you can read a manual and buy a motherboard bundle (so that you know the CPU/RAM/MB are all compatible), it's not hard to assemble a PC from parts. ... As for heat... the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB cards run rather cool compared to a lot of the other 8xxx series cards. Modern AMD dual-core CPUs can be gotten in a 65W or 90W TDP. A 65/90W CPU is not that difficult to cool, and the stock AMD cooler tends to be quiet and work quite well. For example: AMD ATHLON X2 5400+ (ADO5400DOBOX) 2.8GHZ ENERGY EFFICIENT RETAIL BOXED W/512KB X 2 CACHE 65NM 65W (BRISBANE) That particular speed used to be a 90-120W part when it was a 90nm manufacturing process. Now it's only 65W, which is dead-easy to cool. It's also only $75. For our work machines, we buy the 4850e chips, which are a 45W design. |

I don't agree with the weightings here. A cheap processor and a half decent motherboard? Unless you have a nice processor you won't benefit much from a good board, spend $60-80 and put the change into a nice processor. The rest of this is good advice. A friend of mine recently gutted his machine due to sub 1FPS raiding performance. Kept the hard drive and dvd and case, got a new PSU ($20-35 for a PSU will cut it for anything not packing a high end graphics card, if the card requires PCIE power, it'll be closer $50) The ATI 4850 series seems to be the best value for money and performance for power at the moment though. It'll run cutting edge games at moderate settings and for wow, it'll run it maxed out. And fits in the price range or close. My friend is running an AMD 64 X2 5200, he actually wanted a 4400 (they weren't in stock though, he had a budget of about 300 euros for his gutting) but ended up with a 5200 a almost the same price. If you're on a shoestring, the cheaper AMDs will provide much better performance for the money. The 4800 costs about half the price of the E6300 but provides 95% of the performance, the 5200 is slightly behind an e6600 but the price is about half, again. As you move upmarket intel seem to have the edge though. |

Re: New System
That's probably fine. I personally have an ATI Radeon HD 2600XT which has done pretty well for me. |

Re: New System
Hey guys, Pretty much in the same boat as OP with budget $700-800 unless i wait another 2months.I've been looking around for deals and at the build your own sites. After checking the minium requirements for Lich King i have an idea of what i need. I am seriously only going to be using this pc for wow and internet simultaneously My question is how far past minium requirements do i need to be to play the game with good performance in instances/raids and just in general overall? I leveled Remma last year with a 2007 macbook pro and loved it. It never gave me any problems. Also is windows xp gonna dull the game or shud i get vista? Knowing the miniums, what would "your" miniums be? cpu, mb, vid card etc.. I have key board, mouse, monitor. |

Re: New System
XP works fine Video card ... bare minimum these days should be NVidia 8800GT. You can find them for ~125. Even better would be the Radeon 4850 which you can find for under 150. NO reason to go with a single core processor, but also no reason to go quad core. AMD is cheaper, but Intel is the better performer. Memory ... 2 GB should be the min for any gamer today, at least if you want to be able to keep your web browser open while running the games. 3-4 GB would be better. This guy posts some really build ideas. The $800 gaming PC, to frag them all! | Hardware Revolution Amazing that he manages to put together a dual core system with 2 x Radeon 4850s in Crossfire for under $800. This post was a couple months ago, so you might be able to drop that price a little more. If $800 is a little more than you wanted to spend (as that is not including shpping/taxes), his $650 system is still pretty nice. Powerful Gaming PC, for only $650 | Hardware Revolution Those builds include DVD, HDD, mobo, CPU, power supply, memory video card and case. Last edited by Barkle; February 19, 2009 at 10:50 PM.. |
