Re: Cheapest GFX Card for Full Settings

I have an ATI Sapphire HD4870 1GB and I can honestly say its awesome doesnt quite get full details (shadows really are a framerate killer) and for the price range of comparative Nvidia cards the ATI's give you plenty more bang for your buck.

Regarding shadows...

The fact is, shadows in the WoW gfx engine are very poorly implemented. They seem to be more of a proof-of-concept feature as opposed to something that is really playable.

I wouldn't use the shadow feature as your criteria for a hardware upgrade. If you really wanted to utilize them fully, you're starting to look more towards a $300+ video card. And it's really not worth it.

For bang for buck the current king is ATI 4770. Retails in the UK for ~£80 (if you can get your hands on one).

The conclusion from one recent review... AnandTech: Faster Graphics For Lower Prices: ATI Radeon HD 4770

Re: Cheapest GFX Card for Full Settings

These are all great "budget" cards, but the OP's post first point was to run the game at high settings.

Anyway, there isn't a current card that can do this. Cue the "I get 150 fps in Dalaran with my Radeon 1st edition" posts.

Now, knocking down the absolutely useless graphical settings that WoW includes will allow you to have alot of choices.
Shadows can be on, but at only ONE tick to the right. No anti-aliasing, simply run at max resolution.

Going into a 25 man, understand that certain graphical effects will slow down ANY system, for the same reason you won't get 60fps in Dalaran with ANY card.

WoW's graphics engine is old, and will not be rebuilt. Get used to it. Most of the code, like that of Dalaran, is crappy in today's standards.

So get a average card, and realize that while in Dal you will just have to put up with the crappy framerate, and in some 25's, 3 DKs with consecration will also put you iin said crapper. Just check off "Full Screen Glow Effect" while in raid, and you'll be fine.

Cheers for the advice there, seems sound. I've actually been playing around with the settings on my old x800 antique and it seems that I can actually have most things on max and still get about 18fps in Dal, 30-40 everywhere else, may just keep the old girl a little longer til I do a full system rebuild (hopefully over the next few months )

Thanks for all your advice though guys

I'm actually running a 9500GT with 1 GB on it. My current settings are 1680 x 1050 with the highest for everything except Shadows and Player Texture which are at the lowest. I've done 25 man raids with no problems at all and a consistently decent frame rate. I did upgrade the PSU with it though because it was getting near the limit.

Re: Cheapest GFX Card for Full Settings

I just upgraded to an Diamond ATI 4650HD 1gig card and a new power supply. It was 69.00 @ tigerdirect, and a good card if you do not have an power plug for the PCIe slot as it doesnt require an external power source.

I just installed it and did a quick mess around with the slider on Med-High settings nothing else tweeked and was getting 17-6 fps in Dalaran and up to 40 fps everywhere else. It is a great upgrade from my original 3-4 fps in Dalaran I really have been impresssed with the graphics so far everything pops out. I had always wondered what folks were talking about when they spoke about the graphic "pop" but I realize now! I am going to overclock the card to try to squeeze out some more fps but for now I am happy
