Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

Hello,

I'm running windows 7 RC with dual screens, setup to extend the desktop. I noticed after re-installing WoW on the W7 RC box that WoW would suddenly close without warning or error dialog box. I think i have narrowed the occurrences to happening only when i click onto say Firefox or another application outside of WoW while WoW is either loading the log in screen or loading between worlds or anything that requires the loading screen. It appears that if i click onto my second monitor while WoW is loading that it causes WoW to crash without error message or warning. This then cause the error where i can't log in for ~15min due to the "A character with that name already exists."

Anybody else having this problem? Is it a security measure by W7 where it thinks WoW.exe is something bad? I have moved my installation folder from the program files to my documents but to no avail. And also changed WoW to "Run as Administrator" even though i am on the administrator account

Any other ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

i have no problems when i run WoW on Win7 RC 64 bit. 3 monitors too.

comp specs:

SLI GTX295 on I7 processor with 8GB of ram, 3TB RAID5 setting

My WoW install is on another HDD separate to the OS but i can't see that being a problem. since you haven't mentioned, do the usual driver updates, checking both from your manufacturer website and from windows update, while Vista drives do work... they aren't really optimised for Win7... I know for nvidia, they have released drivers specifically for Win7

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

I've got a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 256mb, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz, 2gb RAM, and I'm running the 32bit version of W7 RC. I've run all the windows updates to the point where i just have the optional language packs. I'm guessing it has something to do with the windows security settings so i'm going to try and mess with those and see if it changes.

Thank you again for the help

oh and i thought i would mention i run Wow in windowed mode, with it maximized.

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

Not sure if this helps, but I've had similar experiences, and I'm running Vista.
When there is a loading screen, I tend to alt+tab to firefox or itunes. Sometimes when I do, WoW just dies without any notice. For me, it seems to happen when I alt+tab excessively. Not sure if it's related, but I've had simiar issues.

i just noticed... both alt+tab and windows + tab offers preview for your open windows, I'm not sure how straining those previews or if you can even turn it off but you can turn off Aero desktop which i think these previews are linked under so that might be worth a shot

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

since i'm on dual monitors i don't usually alt tab to get to what i need to. I just click on Firefox or whatever app i have open on the second monitor. Maybe i should try to use alt tab and see if it does the same thing, maybe it lets windows and wow know that hey, i'm going over to this window now. I don't think i've narrowed down the problem quite yet because i can click over in Firefox and then jump back over to wow while its still loading. Its usually the second i click in Firefox though that i remember i shouldn't have so i go straight back to wow. It doesn't always seem to kick me, maybe it depends on where the loading bar is or maybe it all depends on something entirely different.

mmm using default Win7 settings, if you hover over the programs you open it displays a tiny preview of the window(s) of said programs you have open ( eg win explorer you might have E and D dirive open and that little preview would show that... ) otherwise i can't really think of anything that could potentially cause a crash

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

Oh you are lucky. My Win7 RC never even installs. I get blue screen after Win7 tries to load, midway into install. I've got a Zepto.dk laptop, that performs great, besides the Win7RC crashing and a bit low on memory.

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

Sorry, cannot say that I've had any problems whatsoever with Windows 7 RC x64 (nor did I have any issues with previous beta builds). I'm using fairly old hardware (Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe, Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 3GB RAM, GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB), and this particular version of Windows has exceeded all of my expectations compared to previous versions of Windows. I'm eagerly awaiting the RTM.
