Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

win 7 rc ultimate x64 here with 2x24" monitors running from a 9800GT. Had no probs since day 1. My bet would be the drivers.

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

so i noticed we're all posting comp specs sporting the latest videos card...

Serb is running an 8600 256MB, perhaps Win7 is more straining then previous versions of Windows and the 8600 can't handle dual monitors with aero etc

Alternatively there's actual compatibility problems with all cards lower then 9800 ( or some other model just higher then 8600 ). I can't remember offhand what the recommended specs for Win 7 is.

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

hey guys, i setup the wow.exe file in the blizz folder to run in "windows xp SP2" compatibility mode and checked "run as administrator" (which seems to uncheck itself some how). I didn't have any problems with it closing on me. I even tried to get it to close out on me but it never did. Maybe something else has changed since i last messed with it but if anybody else is having problems i suggest trying this.

thanks for all the feedback btw

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

It's the "ALT-TAB" that is doing it. Several people in my guild are having the same problem and it always happens when they "ALT-TAB" to something else.

We are all making jokes about it now, and some of them think its funny to ALT-TAB in the middle of a boss fight to see if it still does it, and when they end up not being able to get back on/in during the fight, they are laughing away on vent.

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

Thanks for the info Serb. I've had this happen to me a couple times. Running 32bit RC1 with 2 8600GTs pushing a pair of 19" viewsonic LCDs. It's happened twice, both times right at the end of raids. It's a beta OS, so I wasn't really concerned, but now that I think about it, it was as I was hearthing out of PUGs and was going to change vent servers both times, so exactly what you said, clicking out while loading.

I'll try out the settings you suggest and try and do some testing to see if that's fixing mine as well.

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

if it's really alt tab then it's nothing new and there's not fix to it unless blizzard actually said that WoW can be alt tabbed

just about every modern game I own clearly states that alt tabbing is not supported ( ie you can do it but if your computer goes up in flames it's not their fault )

I'm running wow in maxmized windowed mode, so its not having to change resolution and such like it does with games that you can't run windowed. I'm merely selecting another window, ie firefox. its the same as alt tabbing between say a word document and an internet browser.

PS: I clicked over to my second monitor to type this while wow was loading >.< i haven't had it crash since i've done the compatibility change

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

well your very action is often not supported in a games. the physical act of pressing alt + tab to switch between programs is clearly stated in most readme as being unsupported

anyway I'm curious but have you tried that WinXP VM environment thing for Win7?

Windows Virtual PC: Home Page

your fix isn't so bad but it seems odd for it to only occur in Win7 and not on XP

Re: Windows 7 RC Crash problems anybody?

i think using "compatibility mode" is probably a similar situation to using a vm. You just don't actually have to run wow through the vm software on a virtual machine. Except i'm using windows 7 built in ability to run programs like they are on an older OS, only thing being done virtually is running it like its xp
