Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW
Hey everyone, I read through another interesting wow.com article. This one is a guide on how to teach your preschooler how to play Warcraft. WoW, Casually: Playing with your preschooler It brings up an interesting debate. Is preschooler age too young for a game like Warcraft? The game has a "T" (for Teen) rating as it contains violence, blood, gore, suggestive themes, and alcohol. The writer of the article argues that it is appropriate to let your child play so long as you're there with him/her teaching right from wrong/fantasy from reality. I found it to be an interesting read and almost made me wish I had a child to adventure with. But alas, I'll need the cooperation of a good lady to make that happen. haha. So, what do you guys and gals think? Is WoW for preschoolers a good idea or is the author way off base on this one?

Re: Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW
both my children play with me ages 3 and 7 the 7 yearold will acutaly take her mothers level 60sih dk and run my 3 yearold through Stocades on his 30ish shammy while niether of them have ever dinged a char themselves they do play and i love being there with them while they run around the zone my 3 yearold son thinks that jumping will make you run faster it hillarious. " Jump for your life Daddy" and to my little girl the DK has that pretty rose spell"DnD" she jsut absoluetly loves it. Make sure you watch the amount of money the chars have on them if you have a little girl playing though her favorite thing to do is go into town and shop....... I swear.. it is a lot of fun though to put your little ones on your lap and kill little kobolds in the starting areas over and over again.

Re: Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW
As a parent myself, I make it a practice not to judge another parents choices because I don't want other parents judging mine. With that said, I would not allow my 5 year old to play but I do allow my 10 year old to play. She is older and is able to process information in a more mature way. We still play with her as we think she is too young to be left to herself in the World of Warcraft. |

Re: Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW
My daughter has played on and off since Ive been playing. (almost 3 years) My biggest concern was language, as in cursing and such. I found it was too much work for me to have her play. She still cant grasp questng and would just rather grind. It normally corpse run after corpse run. She would rather just run and jump around, dance or swim. In my current guild there is a parent that has a 6 year old with a level 60 dk. He did all the work. |

Re: Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW
My issue with it would be less the actual content of the game being hard to supervise, your average TV commercial can have pretty mature themes afterall. It's more the whole idea itself. I mean, I know kids are born these days preloaded with cell phones and learn to type before they can learn to talk and all that ;) but still, if I wanted 'family time' I'd read my kid a book. Culture > gaming. But as someone else said, ultimately each parent has the right to make their own decisions and it's really none of anyone else's business. |

I don't know... if they can't read yet, then the mature stuff doesn't really come into play - it's not like they'd be hanging around Ironforge watching bored people strip; they'd be running around trying to kill stuff. If they're of the reading age, that's a horse of a different color imo.

Re: Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW
I think what bothers me more is that my very young children get this game just as well as adults. The real problem is when you have people acting like 5 year olds when they are over 18. I do limit my kids for the most part but i have to say my little girl can kick some butt in pvp.......wonder how many little kids were kicking my butt in pvp all this time? |

Re: Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW
Now as I stated right in the start that both my kids do play under pretty strict supervision. One thing that I make sure I do when I make them a char or when they take over one of the ones that I havent lvled is take them out of all chat channels I will even go as far as shrinking the text box. The game play itself running around in SW/Ellwyn forest isnt a problem but at times with my daughter(7) the language can get a little much. She will occasionaly look over my shoulder while im doing auctions or what not and be all DAD whats so and so mean. normal response "it means that that person is not very smart you want to be smart dont you alright then never say something like that." Language in any web game is pretty much going to be an issue no matter if the game is rated g or xxx. only way to fix that is to fix the way we speak to each other or what most find offensive anymore i mean come on did anyone go see Transformers 2 That movie had so many unneeded sexy/swearing parts that it was ridiculous I couldnt way to let my kids see it and now im not going to let them they dont need to see that kind of stuff at there age.

Re: Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW
I don't see it being too much of an issue as long as its monitored...just like any children's activity should be. Using common sense should be all that is needed. Just last week, I just started playing with my 7 year old at her urging. She chose to roll a human female mage. That's the closest she can get to being Hermoine Granger in WoW. ![]() Currently I play the toon while she tells me what to do. I find it to be an excellent opportunity for her and I to spend time together doing something we both want to be doing. By playing the character for her I am able to act as mentor and censor. I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before she is off and running by herself. I guess I'll have to get her her own acct! That way we can play together.
