I know ... After listening to what extra life radio has to say about it I dont think I'll be going to see it.

That aside, I dont have children of my own and I know if I did my views may change. I think I would wait untill my child could at understand the mechanics of the game thoroughly. At a too young age when they just know to run, jump, and click one of the squares to kill the wolf I dont think they are really getting into it. I think I would intorduce WoW when they are compitent enough to play DnD. You know, think about whats going on and appriciate a story.

Chat would be the only thing to actually worry me. Espcially direct communication. My 10 year old Brother was harrassed non-stop in a WC run because an idiot rogue wouldnt quit saying he was stupid for spelling and gramatical errors. The rogue ended up taking all the loot and kicking him because he wouldnt tell him his age.

Thats why I currently play the character for my 7 year old. She does quite well with the Wii and the games on her American Girl, Disney websites, etc, but I thinks WoWs mechanics may be a bit much. As for appreciating a story; she is already finished with the 4th Harry Potter book. She started the first one 3 1/2 weeks ago so I think she's OK there, but I definately agree with you. Heck, I spend more time explaining whether her character can lay down in a bed than actually killing. LOL

Re: Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW

I have mixed feelings about this. Having read the article, it does seem developmentally good to teach your child how to play WoW and could definitely lead to some fun "together" time. My concern arises when the child is old enough to read and communicate with other players. While a 3-year old can't read and even a 5-year old probably wouldn't be able to figure out how to log onto the global chat channels once you've disabled them, a ten year old most definitely could. At this point, if you already have the kid playing, it doesn't make sense to tell him that he can't play anymore until he's a teenager and as we are all well aware, other players in the game are often a bit moronic and some of the trade chat conversation is a bit adult.

It's a toss-up for sure - I'm sure my child's dad and I will have many conversations about this once our baby is toddler-aged. I know he's an advocate!

Re: Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW

Before I moved away from my wife and kids for this next year or so for a new job (it sucks in case anyone is wondering...don't ever take family for granted), my son would watch me play sometimes (much to the chagrin of my wife, who is most definitely a WoW hater). He was 7 at the time (8 now) and asked a lot of questions, like "what did that guy say to you?" and "maybe that guy will help you kill those _______ (fill in the blank)." It was funny actually, because he really did not understand why I didn't need help from others with everything I was doing.

I would not allow my children to play WoW (or any MMO) until they are at least 12, maybe older. I don't think the game mechanics are the problem, I think it is the player base that is the problem. Even with language filtering, too much goes on that I feel is inappropriate for younger children. I don't judge others for what they allow, I am just saying how I feel about it.

The best part of all is when I see my son outside pretending to be a warlock and making his friend be a Druid or Mage....

Warlocks FTW!!

Re: Teaching your preschooler how to play WoW

I honestly think you should prevent your children from seeking entertainment from a PC or TV as much as you can. Obesity is terrible 'disease' which has affected a great part of world's population.

Gracie Juijitsu was obligatory from age 4 in my family. Missing 1 of the 4 lessons a week meant no TV/Commodore 64 for a whole week. None of my brothers nor I had a tv in their room. My parents wanted to be aware of every single thing we watched, passively or actively (until a certain age). This lead to the whole family watching TV together, rather than every single individual in his own room. Thank's to these procedures and clarity I developed an important awareness when it comes to entertainment. I can balance my outdoor and indoor entertainment perfectly. I'll do the same thing once my kids reach that age.

Nicely said. I never had a tv in my room either, in fact, I didn't have one at all until I moved out of my parents house.
