Re: Alienware
Bad hardware issues, and notebooks are only good for one thing, and that's portability. However, they make a decent desktop, but laptops have never really been that good. |

Re: Alienware
I have an Alienware Area 51m laptop. Fairly old unit, roughly 5 years old by now. I upgraded the video card soon after I got it to an NVidia 6600. The packaging was fantastic, they carried the Alien theme across with everything, right down to my personal Area 51 clearance pass (with customer support numbers on it). As for the product, I had no problems with the Laptop, I loved it. There is something about the Alienware design that thrills me to the bone. That said, it ran a little hot for the first few weeks I had it until I noticed (when I upgraded the video) that one of the fan cables wasn't connected and so the fan wasn't blowing. I soldered it back on and it worked fine after that. I still use it daily. Though I can see that building your own machine will save you money over all, plus there is something nice about knowing you built your rig. My desktop is a frankenputer, built from scratch by yours truly. /bow Though, there is something to be said about the Alienware reputation. Even though the machine is old, I still get nods of respect when I pull it out at lan parties.

Re: Alienware
I bought a Area 51 m9750 that is currently 19 months old. I have had one issue with a memory module that was taken care of quickly and my customer service experience was great. This happened in March of 08 shortly after I got it. I plan on replacing this one probably next fall and will definitely look at Alienware for it's replacement. I am also going to look at Doghouse systems. I have heard great things about them and think it's worth a look. Quote:

Re: Alienware
I have an alienware desktop that is 5 years old and a laptop that is 2 years old. I haven't had too many problems with either of them and have been rather satisfied with the performance of both. There are a few things I would like to add to this though. My laptop runs hot when gaming, no kidding ehh. My desktop pretty much broke down after 3.5 to 4 years. I had to do quite a bit of self work on it to keep it from dying completely. This doesn't surprise me because I am hard on my computers. In the end, my next comp will NOT be alienware. The cost does not outweight the benefits of me building my own. TL; DR I am happy with what I got from alienware, but plan on building my own for performance and cost. |

Re: Alienware
I'm setting aside money for the budget one right now Aurora Value Gaming Desktop PC With ATI CrossFire – Alienware My poor PC struggles with the bigger particle effects in some places like the console boss in Halls of Stone. It's one of those compact ones with no room for expansion or customization either. Served me well through the burning crusade, but it just doesn't cut it anymore. I want to go with something that might last through the next expansion as well. |

Re: Alienware
pst, hey.... DELL owns alienware. with a little bit of time, you can teach yourself how to build computers. i learned myself on my lunch breaks. just make sure to match the parts, which can be done by cross-referencing manufacturers websites. they will pretty much tell you what hardware to use with what. im sure some of the fine folks here would help you build it, or at least pick out the parts for you. |

Re: Alienware
I would have to tell you to build your own rig. I have friends that use alienware and never had an issue but the cost is a bit much. I built myself an AMD phenom2 955 AM3 with 12 gigs of ram. Vista ultimate 64. 1tb hard drive with ATI 4870X2 750 watt Ultra Power supply Using an Asus Mobo. Stuffed all that into ThermalTakes Spedo tower with 22 inch monitor with shipping for 1500. This was my first build only took me about a couple weeks to really decide what I wanted the Rig to do. Alienware used to have a prestige about it that in my humble opinion since merger with Dell just isn't there. That's my two cents. First time response to anything hope I done it right. |
