Congress is Considering Re-enacting the Draft

The United States Congress is considering re-enacting the Draft. It would require all persons age's 18-27 to serve in some capacity for the armed forces. Both men and women will be required to serve. Running to Canada, or attending college will not be options. The United States also has an agreement with Canada to return people who try to dodge the draft by moving to Canada. College students will not be exempt. The Draft will start in June 2005.
You can find the article here: http://www.congress.org/congressorg...=ua_congressorg

I know that doesn't really effect me in Australia, but it's slightly concerning to think that families will have no choice on the fate of their father's, mother's, sons and daughters. I know the thought of my boyfriend being hauled off to war with no choice in the matter scares the hell out of me.... :?

Congress is Considering Re-enacting the Draft

Having served 6 years in the US Navy, I can say without a doubt that the US Armed Services are very attractive to young people for many reasons... except during times of war. The whole Iraq thing soured alot of people who suddenly realized that you could actually get seriously killed if you were in the military. All branches of the US Armed Services has seen a shar decline in recruits since the Iraq War.

Ironically, this is a complete turn around from when I served. I was in the first Gulf War. Afte that one, there was a huge increase of recruits. So many people were enlisted, that congress approved early retirements and started to make it more difficult to advance which drove many people to not reenlist.

A draft is a bad thing. It does seem to step on what we call freedom to decide for ourselves. The US Armed Forces are completely voluntary. Unless of course there is a time of war. Then you will do as you are told and like it. Soon, we will be enlisting people like many other countries around the world. In lots of places, military service is mandatory for a term of 2 years (in most places).

Congress is Considering Re-enacting the Draft

this is scary for those of us close to finishing school who already have a life lined up for them. of course this would all be happening a year after the draft is enacted so i may never get to see this life. guess i'll have to marry my girlfriend and have kids soon.
