Upgrade experience: Old XP system to New Vista
Just wanted to share this for anyone contemplating this move.
I had a 3yr old XP system, Dell Dimension 4600 Pentium4 2.7Ghz, 1.5Gb RAM with an NVIDIA Ge5XXX series card. Getting average 15-20FPS. Upgraded last night to a new Vista system, Intel Dual Core E6750 2.66 Ghz, 4Gb 667MHz RAM, NVIDIA 8600GT and a lovely 22" Widescreen Flat Panel LCD monitor. You most definitely can just copy your entire WoW folder across - no need to reinstall and patch, patch, patch. Net result: FPS jumped to 60+, with every WoW graphics options turned on and set to MAX, running 1680 x 1050 resolution. Game looks totally different - especially with the full screen glow effect, full shadows, etc, etc. The change to 22" widescreen is incredible - the WoW landscape extends into your peripheral vision. System is v snappy. And the joke is - the system costs less in real $ than my old one. |

Re: Upgrade experience: Old XP system to New Vista
And I bet games would run better if you'd use XP on the new system, not Vista.
*hides* Still, cool new machine. Oh btw, for anything thinking about it, so far DualCore > QuadCore, so don't buy'em just because it sounds hot - at least not for now ![]() |

You also have a better card (i think) and dual processors. I would think that would have more to do with your performance than your OS.

Re: Upgrade experience: Old XP system to New Vista
are you running 32 bit vista?
4Gb 667MHz RAM how did the system detect and configure for this? You most definitely can just copy your entire WoW folder across - no need to reinstall and patch, patch, patch. MAN this is GREAT NEWS TO ME....thanks for the tip |

Re: Upgrade experience: Old XP system to New Vista
I tested a built machine that kept a 60 fps/ sec up with graphics at max. I still had issues with the vista alot of it being vista not having the correct sound driver and being unable to find the correct sound driver to make the sound on WoW, and not having the correct driver to make my wireless internet work. I had to go to another computer and put the driver on stick since the disk that came with my wireless internet did not have the vista driver. And then the constant warnings are so annoying it is the chicken little of operating systems, it constantly says are you SURE you want to do this to pretty much everything you do so much that you pretty much learn to ignore any warnings at all.

Re: Upgrade experience: Old XP system to New Vista
I didn't check 64bit myself for WoW but if its not drivers (well, obvious) there is about 1 in 1000 apps that doesnt work on 64bit. You dont get any speed benefit, ideally also no disadvantage. You cant use more than 3 (plus some) GB on 32bit, but WoW works more than fine with 2 GB already...

Re: Upgrade experience: Old XP system to New Vista
Just a quick note but make sure when installing updates through the blizz installer make sure you tell Vista to run wow as administrator ie right click on the wow icon and choose 'run as administrator'. Otherwise you may find it cant install patch updates.
ps: I have just 1GB ram on my system and find it frequently has to use swap space on the hard drive, so I would definately reccommend 2GB+ ram if your on Vista. |
