Internet Explorer - Cannot Display Webpage :(

Yes, I have gotten the dreaded "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page" error message. I've looked at different sites using Mozilla Firefox, but cant find anything that can help. I haven't been able to try everything because this computer isn't even a year old, so I'm not too computer savvy.

Anyone have advice on fixing this? [In English please]

Re: Internet Explorer - Cannot Display Webpage :(

Does this come up for every website you visit? or just a few sites?
There is a chance you got spyware, adware, malware, or have had your browser hijacked. However, before you go down that path, you should make sure of a few things.
One that when you received these messages, you were connected to the internet, and that internet explorer wasn't set to work offline.
Two, that you were typing the correct URL and that there were no typos.
Three, run your virus program and see if anything turns up.

Also, try turning off any browser addons you might have installed, toolbars, etc, and empty your browser cache via the tools/internet options menu.

If you suspect it to be spyware, try downloading one of the free scanning tools online. If one doesn't work, try another. Ones I can suggest are, Windows defender, Search and Destroy, and Adaware.

You should install these programs anyways as they can also help prevent malware from entering your system in the first place.

Comes up for every site,
[X] Connected to Internet, not Work Offline
[X] Correct URL (Favorites Links, I've checked them already)
[X] Emptied Cache
Ill run the virus scanner now, if that doesnt work, ill take a look at the other scanners

What you need to do is contact your ISP and have them troubleshoot things for you. I'm not saying it is actually a problem on their end, but it is their job to support your ability to browse the web. It's what you're paying them for after all

Oh, and Firefox ftw!

Re: Internet Explorer - Cannot Display Webpage :(

In addtion to the steps above, check whether you have a proxy server enabled.

Either help or keep quiet imho. Browser wars are just as stupid a "roll alliance" or "l2p" comments.

Re: Internet Explorer - Cannot Display Webpage :(

Hey! Everything is fixed now. Mozilla eventually went down, so I panicked. My connection description sais it was "Firewalled" so I looked around. I found that it must have been Norton Internet Security 2006 because I unistalled it, and now its fine ))

I do have the firewall provided by Internet Explorer 7 up, but is there a free one that might be better?

That's true if the argument was between Mozilla/Firefox and Opera (both of which are very nice), but when it comes to Opera/Mozilla/Firefox versus IE6/7, the former wins by default. Not only is IE technically inferior and a huge security risk, it's not even remotely standards compliant. As a wannabe-webdesigner, IE is a huge pain in the rear end for me, because a fair bit of the time, just because something is standards compliant, correctly formatted, validates properly and works flawlessly in Opera and FF, it might not work as intended in IE (this is especially true with more complex stylesheets, I suggest you look for the Acid2 test for an example of this).

Because of it's large market share, when it comes to large, widely popular sites, you're going to have to deal with IE compatability. Alot of people go about this by creating small serverside scripts that check useragents and give IE users a watered down, compatible version of the site, which is ok as a short term solution, but in the long term, IE is holding back the web as well as web developers.

Anyway, sorry for going off topic, but every time I see people using IE, I just HAVE to point out how inferior it is.
