Does anyone play on dsl
I am currently a comcast customer and have great service with their internet BUT due to pricing wars I can get a better deal on AT&T internet, home phone and TV with a straight price instead of a 12 month with comcast. So what my question is .... Does anyone play on DSL and if so is it DSL lite, DSL ultra, DSL xtreme or xtreme 6.0. Oh yeah and how does it work for W.O.W.
I play wow and wow only as far as games go online. |

Re: Does anyone play on dsl
I have ATT dsl xtreme 6 and i love it, cept for the fact that lately if p2p traffic gets heavy the reset the damned connection repeatedly until the p2p traffic slacks off. i have to throttle it to keep my connection up. the problem with that is the wow patcher has no "throttle" and when downloading patches from blizzard it takes friggin forever because of the constant disconnects.

Re: Does anyone play on dsl
I just got off the phone with AT&T and I can only get dsl ultra in my area. I can not get exteme or extreme 6.0. I live inside the middle of nashville tennessee dead in the middle of the city. I know people that live in smaller towns and they get extreme ..makes no sense to me.
So does anyone use ultra or know if dsl ultra is any good for wow.. thx |

Re: Does anyone play on dsl
You really shouldn't need a ton of bandwidth to play properly. I currently play wow on dialup with a 45kbs connection(live in the country) and have few problems. Only in av, 25 mans, and the occasional busy situation does it hamper my abilities.

Re: Does anyone play on dsl
When it comes down to it, there isn't all that much difference between cable and DSL. Unfortunately there's a lot of marketing spin out there that keeps people confused. Both cable and DSL have a point within their infrastructure where shared bandwidth can be a problem. With cable it's in the local neighborhood network, and with DSL it's the feed to the remote DSLAM in your neighborhood. Nowadays the upload and download speed caps out pretty closely between the two. It just depends on what your local infrastructure is. WOW isn't much of a bandwidth pig when you play, just on the updates. As far as the updates are concerned, the limiting factor for most people isn't the speed of your connection, but more how your computer's security software handles the multiple connctions (WOW uses a P2P update setup) - and whether or not your cheapo cable/dsl modem pukes out NATing so many connections. For example, I work for an ISP - so when I'm updating WOW on my work computer (it's a cool company!), I'm using a gigabit LAN behind 3 OC12's through different carriers. So... a lot of bandwidth. When I'm on a PC with active security software, it's much slower (a few minutes) to do the basic peer to peer updates than it is to find a mirror with the actual update file available for direct download (a minute or two tops - often times less than a minute). Right now the only real difference between DSL and Cable is that most people have a slightly lower latency on DSL than on Cable, although Cable is catching up more and more. In the end it's really six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Re: Does anyone play on dsl
I have AT&T DSL and I can tell you I'm dissatisfied. But that could be because I am just dissatisfied with AT&T as a whole. The only real problem I have with the DSL is that it can reset itself at anytime of day, be it 3pm or 3am, which tells me that load/capacity has nothing to do with it (at least mine).
However, I think that changing systems would probably be a pain. If I were you I'd call Comcast and tell them you're getting a better offer from AT&T and see if they'll match it. My father in law did that when he got a better offer from AT&T and they did match it. |

Re: Does anyone play on dsl
I had verizon DSL, and it kept intermittently crapping out for 5-60 seconds. Enough to disconnect you from the game, but not enough to get a fix from tech support. I'm guessing it was related to my specific location, but it was frustrating enough that I switched to comcast. Comcast is much, much faster, and haven't had a single outage (that I'm aware of) in three months.
YMMV. |
