memory isn't really an issue for him. sure, more is better, but 18GB's of 1066MHz running at 3-3-3-8 isn't going to change the fact that he has no dedicated video card and w/o it his FPS is crippled.
I agree.. but for the most part, changing the video card and/or operation of how it handles memory is not something that is going to happen for his laptop just as a level 20 isn't going to have access to badge gear. I was going more for what he could do to maximize his laptop's performance with the tools he had at his disposal.

I do agree that a better video card that isn't shared is a better, though unlikely, answer.

As for the external video card.. 1.) this is the first time i've seen this and 2.) it appears to require PCIe to work.

Same here too, not a whole lot of options in his case.

That was the first time I had heard of it too. As far as I can see it is not out and Asus has no information about it on its web site. And it does look to require PCIe.

Re: Noob question about pc spec

I had a compaq, was good for everything but gaming. If you are going OEM, HP has been pretty good to me. I always get max processor, memory, nvidia or ati chipset video cards, and the fastest disk drive access speed.

If you are not going OEM, I'd recommend sites like cnet.com or pcmag.com
there, search for gaming laptop reviews. From that, google the manufacturers website and work on ordering one to your price/specifications.

Another great start is http://www.pricewatch.com/

I had a fair idea of what I wanted and what my price range was. I eventually got the right desktop and the right price. Since they link different distributors, I'd recommend that you research the company (customer reviews and Better Business Bureau) before you put in that credit card info, though.

In my 12 years of buying PCs, you really do get what you pay for when it comes to PCs, but bare bones and custom builds have always done well for me. If you have to do vista, just game home edition, the rest is just a pig that's been given some makeup. I'd go with XP Pro, it's a good OS. Always consider a Mac, they are cool in their own right.
