Re: Video Cards - What are you using?

Of your two cards above I'd go for the ATI just because of previous experience with them (I feel their drivers are better all around - Win/Mac/Lin/BSD). I'd also second BCShooter's recommendation about checking out Tom's Hardware - They may put you on to something better.

I'm using a MacBook pro so I'm a bit limited on choices & don't pay as much attention to the big polygon-pushers as I used to, but the video card in the laptop is a Radeon 1600 with 128MB of VRAM. It's not a screamer (usually holds about 35-45fps in populated areas), but it handles 99% of WoW without a problem with pretty good detail settings.

The only time it's really bogged on me was during a raid on Undercity (too many toons, too many spell effects - even with detail turned way down it was almost unplayable).

Not in games, at this moment everything above a E6750 it's an overkill for most games, and it certanly is for WoW.

Re: Video Cards - What are you using?

I am using a nVidia 8600GT with Intel Core2 Duo processor (2.2 GHz), also have 100Gb HD (7200 RPM). Nothing overly special but it works pretty well. I wish my frame rates were in the 60's consistently though . I still get much lower (15-25fps) in Shat/IF/SW, especially when a lot of people are running around. I believe part of my problem is that I am using a laptop. My desktop video card died last fall, and it did not have a PCI express slot so I would have had to get a new motherboard. Decided to just get a new laptop instead. I like my video card for the most part, but I may try ATI on my next computer.

Re: Video Cards - What are you using?

OK so I purchased the Nvidia 8600GTS 512MB Overclocked PCIe -

I was disappointed at first because I was averaging 30fps and although this really is fine because that at least meets cinematic standards.... I wanted more because like some of you.. I noticed lower framerates when the screen became conjested in a dungeon fight or in shat....

I was trying everything with my video settings in my UI... From all up high to all down to nothing... my frame rates were staying consistent...

I was like WTF!!!!

Then I remembered... let me look at my bios settings on the motherboard!

Lo and behold.... I had my PCIe throughput at only 1x

I turned it up to 16x.... restarted the computer.

Now I went to the Nvidia site and downloaded the latest driver which had been revised 11 times since the version on the software that came with the card and mind you.. this is a newly released card and it's only been out a few months....

I then went to RUN typed in msconfig... turned of all of the automatic loaded crap that I do not use daily and locked that down..

Restarted the computer...

Logged into WOW and now I am averaging 56fps with tons of peaks into the high 60's and low 70's range and I have not seen the fps rates go below 47 yet... so I am a happy camper to say the least.

But the biggest improvement that I am happy with is I now run the game with most of video settings at or near 100% and with the updated graphics of this new card... the game is prettier than ever!

Re: Video Cards - What are you using?

Have noticed that since I've had the card installed the last few days that my framerates have actually started averaging 60fps and rarely dips now..... maybe the card had a break in period?

Anyway - I am happy as hell with my new video card and the game permance is top notch now!

Re: Video Cards - What are you using?

I used to run a dual core with 1gb of ram and two 7600gt cards and now i run a quad core with 3gb of ram and only one card. even thought its old and only one of them i get much better performance with this. seems to me that a big part of it is ram, especially with the ui i have. i wouldnt buy a better card because im happy with 40-50fps
