Re: Video Cards - What are you using?

Ah, you guys all make me so jealous. I got a Radeon X1600XT recently as an upgrade from my old GeForce FX5200. Tried putting it in the computer, the computer simply doesn't start. It's like the power is turned off.

And I've tried everything imaginable. I've determined that it has to do with the BIOS or with the speed of the AGP slot. Oh well.

On a good day I might break 10 fps, but I generally average at about 5-6 fps.

*grumble*

Well, I'll be getting a really nice laptop in September hopefully. So we'll see.

Re: Video Cards - What are you using?

7800GT, Core2 OC'd to 2.8GHz and 3GiB of RAM. That is good enough to fivebox WoW, though then I must turn the video quality to absolute minimum. With one instance of WoW turned all the way to max quality I get around 25-45FPS. Of course I'm running it under Linux too so I don't get any of that weird lag in Shat or other bigger cities, they are just as fast for me as flying around open spaces

I take you haven't used ATI in Linux before, right? If you had you'd certainly left out Linux from the list. Also I'm not sure why BSD is there, there is no official BSD support, only the opensource ones and they aren't particularly good.

QFT, but ATI said some months ago that they would release the source code of the drivers in order to reach the Linux community, didn't know if it was done, but i doubt it.

Anyway, i can assure you that till dec-2007 going ati-linux was a bad idea, not that nvidia was linux friendly (as they never went open source), but at least it worked as intended.

Getting a laptop to play WoW isn't the best idea. You'd need to have a pretty good video card (which most laptops just don't have) to pull that off.

As for your current card, can your power supply give enough juice with that card in the system? There might also be another power connector that needs to be plugged into the video card or motherboard to help support it.

I have an ATI HD 2600 XT and it does awesome for WoW. The price has gone down quite a bit but it is still a really good card for WoW. Keep in mind that the graphics engine that WoW uses is a bit out dated so you don't need an SLI rig to get the most out of it.

I'VE used a lap top for over a year now, it just depends on what you buy.
