Re: Dsl router/modem info
Well if you're not getting any packet loss, I don't think you have a bad filter at all. I also don't suspect that your modem is faulty. If you're getting 249ms response time from pinging a server inside your ISP's core network (so not hoping around all over the place first), I think you're looking at either a saturated line (you're using all the bandwidth available - get a faster line?), or poor Signal to Noise ratio (less than ideal line quality, or a long distance between you and your ISP's local hardware - AKA their DSLAM). You're not going to change that with different routers. That gets changed by either getting a faster connection with your ISP, or having them send out techs to make sure your line is clean. So in a nutshell, you can't do much about it by yourself. It's time to get your ISP involved. The kicker is that they may not be able/willing to do much either, to be blunt about it. India has a massive amount of telco infrastructure to maintain, and if your ISP doesn't see aggregious packet loss, they may not have the time/resources/inclination to do much about your connection. I wouldn't buy any new hardware in this case - it isn't likely to fix anything at all. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Along with what tclkage has said about the only thing I can think to do is possibly see if there is a better ISP in your area.. though that might be a gamble in and of itself.

Re: Dsl router/modem info
i don't have too many options here , my current ISP is the best available in my area , i recently changed my ISP a month ago & this one is way better than what i had earlier , as mentioned by tclkage i don't have any hardware issue with my dsl modem/router or splitter , my current speed is between 512 to 2 MB connection , this is what my ISP is giving me now
The next package available for me is a 2 MB line thats the max provided . Do you think changing my speed plan would help ? |

Re: Dsl router/modem info
changing your plan *might* help..though what is the cost difference? If it is a far bit more to change I dont know that it would be worth it, honestly. Then again... if you have the money...

Re: Dsl router/modem info
well i am working so i can afford changing the plan . I could try it out for 1 month to see the difference . Right now when i ping my DNS server my response is 249ms so on getting a higher connection would i see this number going down ? how would i know the difference with my new plan ?

Re: Dsl router/modem info
Hmm.. thats a good point. I dont know that you will see any latency improvements. I think you should get their techs out to your place and see what they can do on their end for you. More than likely its something to do with the lines.

Re: Dsl router/modem info
If you upgrade your line speed and see a reduction in your ping time, then you know that the problem is that your line was saturated - as in you were using all the "speed" you had available. A "maxed out" line will always show a higher latency. However, if you upgrade your line speed and don't see a reduction in your ping time, than you're looking at poor line quality (or too great a distance from you and your ISP's DSLAM).

Re: Dsl router/modem info
Latency and uptime are far more important than bandwidth for WoW. Heck, playing over a low-latency dialup > a high latency EDGE/3G connection.
I had a problem with DSL last year where my ping to yahoo would go from 130ms to over 3000ms for no apparent reason; and then it would sometimes just drop the connection for 15-30s, every 5-30 minutes for an evening. Frustrating as hell, even got me booted from arena teams :/ I had the good fortune of being able to switch to a FiOS connection though, and it's been smooth sailing at <100ms latency since then. One way to test the latency and uptime is to go to cmd and type: Code:
ping www.yahoo.com -t Let it run overnight, and see what the packet loss and ping time min/max/average is. Edit: No, a higher bandwidth connection with the same ISP will probably not fix latency/uptime. I tried that myself with the DSL, going from 768k -> 3Mb, made zero difference. YMMV though. |

Re: Dsl router/modem info
To the OP
I would advise you to ask your ISP if they can fit a fixed Profile to your line by removing Interleaving, this will lower your latency by upto 50%. It's what we do for our customers when they call in with latency issues. |
