Favorite Christmas movies
My wife and I (to a lesser degree) are already getting into the hioliday spirit, talking about gifts, vacation plans, meal plans, etc. We also like watching holiday movies. I was wanting to know what everyone's favorite Christmas movies are.
One I grew up watching and still love to this day is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. My wife likes The Holiday, with Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, Kate Winslett, & Jude Law; not really a Christmas movie per se, but still has the holiday flavor. So how 'bout it...it doesn't have to be Christmas focused, but maybe set around that time. I would like to expand our DVD collection a little. |

"A Christmas Story" from 1983 and the 1951 version of "A Christmas Carol" with Alastair Sim as Scrooge.

Re: Favorite Christmas movies
Vos, if your wife enjoyed the Holiday check out 'Love Actually'. It's done by the same creative team and is set in London one month before Christmas.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314331/ Cast includes:
Check this one out too - The Family Stone (2005) Another pretty solid cast. Beyond these I stick to the old classics. |

Re: Favorite Christmas movies
I have no idea why but in relatively contemporary terms (and for personal reasons) I go with "Scrooged" (Bill Murray) but thats possibly the only "Christmas Carol" re-working I can stand from recent time (there was a reasonably satisfactory adaptation starring Patrick Stewart I saw televised last year that didn't become overly saccharine...).
Other than that give me classics with unequivocal messages and a distinct lack of thigh and I'd quite happy ;p |

Re: Favorite Christmas movies
My favorites dating back to when I was growing up:
Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer - Original with Misfit toys, etc Christmas Vacation Elf The first two I grew up on and still get a kick out of today, Christmas vacation is just a classic, and Elf never gets old. Re: Favorite Christmas movies
I know when Christmas time comes I'll be wanting to amend this but mine is Nightmare Before Christmas.
But then again, I'm a sucker for musicals. |

"A Christmas Story"
A Christmas Story - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia We have it on DVD and yet when TBS shows it for 24 hours straight starting Christmas Eve evening our tv is glued to TBS. It's got a good wholesome story while not being cloyingly sweet. If you liked Wonder Years or Stand By Me imagine this as a G/PG Christmas version of those. |

Re: Favorite Christmas movies
I second "Love Actually" - my husband and I watch it every year. The characters are very real (sometimes painfully and sometimes hilariously so). Very enjoyable movie that holds up well over time!

Re: Favorite Christmas movies
Friday after next with Ice Cube and Mike Epps is good for a few laughs. But my favorite yet another not so much a "Christmas" themed movie is The War of the Roses. It was released Dec 8th 1989 and stared Micheal Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito. My family and I saw this on of Christmas Eva of that year so I always have link them. But who could not agree that Bad Santa with Billy Bob Thornton is the greatest adult Christmas movie of all time!
