Updating my comp soon, need advice

Hello all, Im going to be upgrading sometime mid febuary and was wondering what direction I should take my new pc in.

here is what I have in mind, feel free to state pros/cons on the build here goes....

Processor: AMD 64 3400+ or FX-51 (if cheaper by then) something with really good cache.
mobo: not sure here, still looking, preferably something with atleast 2 gigs of ram space, also thinking of going with PCIe, if I can afford it that is.
Video card: I want either the Nvidia 6800 ultra, or the ATI x800 XT (not sure which card here would be better, Im using an nvidia ti 4600 128 mb atm and I can run Doom 3 just fine, at 1024 x 768, but I have heard that the ATI cards seem to be built better, again not sure here.
as far as case/ps/hard drive/etc I have most of so mostly worrying about the mobo/cpu/vid card.

again if anyone has any thoughts let me know and thanks in advance.

Sil

*edit*
I will have roughly 1,000.00 to spend on all of this so if that helps on your sugesstions, there it is.
