Steve Irwin Dead...

Television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died in a marine accident in north Queensland, state government sources say.

The 44-year-old is believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, sources say.

He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred.

While not really a fan, I always thought he had an obvious love for what he did....mixing entertainment with education. It's a shame to see him pass.

Often a bit odd, but a great Aussie. Now I'll have to explain it to the kids tonight, as it's been on the news here all afternoon.
Apparently he was swimming just above the ray, when its bard popped up and pierced his heart. The damage would have been irrepairable...Crikey...

Re: Steve Irwin Dead...

He lost me as a fan back when he dangled his infant in front of a croc during one of his live shows. Not that I wanted to see him dead or anything, but that's where he lost me.

Re: Steve Irwin Dead...

Steve Irwin has done a lot for Australia and wildlife in general. He was making yet another documentary when the Stingrae lashed the barb up and pierced his heart. Stingrae's are not aggressive creatures and was most likely just startled and reacted. With the bard going through his heart there was no chance of survival... even if it had of missed, it's extremely toxic and would have likely caused his death pretty quickly.

While yes, the day he fed the crocodile while holding his one month old son didn't do his image any good, he was never charged with anything and has always stated that the media made it worse than what it was... that wouldn't surprise me.

I think that Steve had previewed a death like this...
I'm italian, and here, he was known for his beatiful and amazing documentaries.
It seemed of being there with him, when he "interviewed" several animals!
Hope that, from tha Heaven, he'll be able to bless his son...

the man had passion, no amount of media stirring can take that away from him.

The dude was a hoot. Entertaining, educational and all-around filled with exuberance.
But seriously he was always a half a step away from being a snack.
Sympathies to his family.
