+DMG vs STA

Before consulting the boards i decided to ask a warlock on my server which an affliction lock should be focusing on: +damage or stamina. He said they should work at a 1:1 ratio.
In other words: if i get a new item with 5 less stamina, i should only replace my current one if it has 5 more +damage.
Using this logic i figured when i get an item and i dont know if it's an upgrade i just add the damage and the stamina and use the one with the larger sum.

Does this make any sense?

thats usually the formula i use, but you shud specify what your using it to do...eg, training you might want more damage, or more stam for pvp, etc

Re: +DMG vs STA

Personally I live by these forumula's:

Affliction based build: +damage > +stam > +crit > int
Destruction based build: (+crit & +damage) > +stam > int
Demonology based build*: +damage > +stam > +crit > int

*I haven't played this build for any length of time so this is really an educated guess

Re: +DMG vs STA

So i should be sacrificing stamina for +damage no matter how much HP i'm losing?

No. It's a balancing act. Going too heavy towards one stat isn't going to do much good in most situations. Go pure +damage, you need to hope the mobs do not hit you. (har har). Going mainly stamina will make every fight a bit painful to endure dragged out. YMMV.

But, the thing is, the more +damage you have, the less time will be spent taking damage. I finished a questline yesterday, where I delivered a crystal to the thing in the middle of Shattrath. I got a 2hr buff with +110dmg, and decided to pot/oil up (arcane elixir + shadow pot + the +24dmg wizard oil) and grind some blood elves for Scryer rep. I had around +970dmg without using trinkets, and 1vs1 fights were as simple as UA+CoS+Corr+Drain life and then Drain soul. 100% hp and mana, ready for next one.

Drain life healing me for 450hp every second nulled out all damage done, and the 9.5k hp I have, is completely pointless. Switching 3-4k of stamina for +damage would've just made my grinding faster.

Re: +DMG vs STA

Good ideas.

For a Demonology build, i'd say +Sta>+Int>+damage/heal>+crit

More effective pets make a more effective Demonology 'lock, IMO.

Sure, however you cannot base every situation around all possible buffs available to you nor can you realistically gear up under the assumption said buffs will be an every day occurance. (may be for you, I guess?) That +damage doesn't do much good if a mob gets lucky a 1k+ crit or your spells are resisted in a row. Mages have ways of controlling the mobs from getting to them, locks...not so much. I'm not under valuing +damage, but even with more +damage you still have to balance that around stamina at least.

The point I was trying to make is going all out on one stat has consequences when your other stats cannot hold up. The poster (setter) whom I was quoting asked simply if sacrificing a lot of stamina is worth the +damage. It is not and is a balancing act. If I'm gaining +15 damage but losing +30 stamina, that ain't a good trade off. If I were gaining +15 damage, but only losing say 10 stamina then it'd be an easier tradeoff. And if nothing else, just get enchants. ;)
