Guidence on socketing

I have just stated to accumulate socketed items for my level 70.

Could someone outline what gems I need?

I understand that the coloured sockets represent the colour of the gems. But I saved gem drops as I've got them, but they won't go in.

Do they need to be crafted by Jewel crafting prior to socketing?

What are your recommendations for the different colour sockets?

Before looking into more specific questions, such as which gems Warlocks tend to go for, can I suggest reading over the general gem/socket information pages already readily available on the internet. I believe some of the questions above would deffinately fall under the "ask yourself a few quick and vital questions" section of my latest thread: Notification about your postings...

The first place I would start would be the official Blizzard WoW Site and their Socketed Items Guide. Then after that, there is the wealth of information which can be found at the player created WoW Wiki:

About sockets
About Gems
And about Jewel crafting in case you were interested.

Those links will help inform you all about how gems are created and how they fit into sockets.
