Equipment question about +damage
I am level 38 and have really focused on +Sta gear to this point. The more I read the posts here, the more I realize I need to focus on +Damage gear as well. My question is, how is the damage calculated? If the piece says +11 damage what would that mean to my spells. Next, are there any recommendations on gear to obtain at my level so I don't have to give up all of my +Sta gear.
I did search for the answers but +damage came up with a ton of posts and most didn't explain what I was searching for. Thanks!!! |

Re: Equipment question about +damage
The actual amount of +damage you gain is dependant on the unmodified casting time of the spell (2.5 sec cast is the base for 100% of the bonus), the detailed specifics of this can be found on wowwiki or the official site.
As for gear our local Dread Lord of the Fashionable has put together the following umber-guide to what to wear: http://www.wowmb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=15357 Hope this helps! |

Re: Equipment question about +damage
I assume you mean DoTs such as Corruption and Curse of Agony. The only instant direct damage spells we have are Death Coil and Shadowburn, which as Rubino said, gets 42.86% of our spell damage (which is added to the spells base damage). Direct damage spells are calculated as the original cast time of the spell (a Shadowbolt will still be calculated as a 3 second cast even if you have Bane) divided by 3.5. So Shadowbolt would be:
3 / 3.5 = 0.857 = 85.7% DoTs (instant or not) are calculated by the length of the DoT divided by 15 seconds. Note though that Corruption, Curse of Agony, and Curse of Doom's coefficients were nerfed so they don't follow the formula. As an example, I'll use Unstable affliction. 18 / 15 = 1.2 = 120% Simple math really. One other thing to remember is that spells that heal and do damage benefit from half of what the coefficient would be. Check out Siphon Life for example. [30 / 15] / 2 = 1 = 100% I wish this was in my guide somewhere, but here's a quick list of spell damage coefficients without having to do the math. ~Spell Damage Coefficients~ DoT Spells Corruption........................................ ......93.6% Curse of Agony....................................120.0% Unstable Affliction (DoT Effect).........120.0% Curse of Doom....................................200.0% Siphon Life............................................10 0.0% Seed of Corruption (DoT Effect)........150.0% Direct Damage Spells Shadow Bolt..........................................85.7 1% Soul Fire.............................................. ...115.0% Searing Pain..........................................42.8 6% Unstable Affliction (DD Effect).............42.86% Shadowburn........................................ ...42.86% Conflagrate....................................... ......42.86% Death Coil.............................................. .40.72% Shadowfury........................................ .......19.5% Incinerate........................................ ........71.43% Seed of Corruption (DD Effect).............22.0% Hyrbid Spells Immolate (Direct Damage Effect)........20.0% Immolate (DoT Effect)............................65.0% Channeled Spells Rain of Fire.............................................. .95.2% Hellfire (damage to enemies)..........214.29% Hellfire (damage to self)....................142.86% Drain Life.............................................. ...71.43% Drain Mana.............................................. ....0.0% Drain Soul.............................................. .214.3% Health Funnel (Healing).......................285.7% Other Spells Life Tap (life cost and mana gain)........80.0% Dark Pact.............................................. .....96.0% |

Re: Equipment question about +damage
Just a note on the Seed of Corruption Co-effiecents. Although technically correct, since the dot of the affect is limited to 1044 damage you only see the +22% on the DD part. The dot coefficient, for practicle purposes, hastes the DD part, as does other damage to the target.
