Trinket Assistance

Reading another thread in here got me wondering how people "use" two trinkets.

I recently picked up the Icon of Silver Crescent. I already have the Scryer's Bloodgem and Shiffars Nexus Horn. When not raiding I typically have the icon and nexus horn equipped, as I can "use" the icon when I want (and its not in CD) and the procs from the horn are a nice bonus (plus some nice additional crit added).

When raiding I started using the bloodgem and icon. As you can't trigger both at the same time, and I always want to have one up for when I get ready to toss a CoD I was just curious how you control your trinket use. Do you manually use each one alternating back and forth as the CDs expire? Before I had the icon, I had the /use bloodgem in my CoD macro that also triggered the Amp'ed Curse (some nice hits with that combo). I changed my macro to say both "/use 13 /use 14" before the Amp and CoD hoping that it would use whichever one isn't on cooldown automatically but I'm not sure if that is the case.

Re: Trinket Assistance

I use trinkets manually (macro, but just the trinket on that macro), /use 14 is my Icon (or pvp trinket..) and 13 is currently my darkmoon card.

Honestly man, you shouldn't be using trinkets on CoD, you should use them on shadow bolts and dot refreshes. (note, not life taps/dark pact either). Here's why:

155 damage bonus from the icon. 155*2*1.1*1.1*1.05/60 seconds = 6.6 dps increase. Your UA/Corruption will see a remarkably larger increase in dps than this, as will shadow bolts/Siphon/whatever. If you want to macro your trinkets to something, macro them to a shadow bolt.

That macro (/use 13 /use 14 amp curse, cod) is correct. There's some script string to prevent the "Item is not ready yet" error message, but I can't recall it. I just think you should be saving your trinkets for spells that give you a bigger bang for your buck.

Re: Trinket Assistance

So what is better, to use your trinket before putting up CoD and the 1st round of dots, or saving it til you start Shadowbolt spamming?

Re: Trinket Assistance

You will get more bang for your buck by activating your trinket prior to applying your dots and curse. You get the full benefit of the bonus for the duration of the dots whereas if you use it on sbolts, you only get the bonus on 2-3 bolts. Your best bet is to cram in as many casts during the bonus' duration as possible. Another concern would be to cram in the most damaging per cast time. This is how they rate from better to worse: cod, Curse of Agony, corr, ua, sl, immo, sburn, and sbolt. So sbolt will give you the least benefit for your trinket activation.

Re: Trinket Assistance

Yeah, just a clarification. the bonus to damage you had during the placement of the dot stays even if the buff is over is that correct? Like curse of doom, you use the trinket, then place the dot, but in a minute the damage that will go off still uses the damage total you had while you had the trinket up. That is how I understood it, but can anyone verify that as fact?

Re: Trinket Assistance

Can someone please explain to me why you would ever have 2 of these style trinkets equipped at once (scryers gem and the Silver Crescent)?

1) You can't use them at the same time.
2) They share cooldown times, so they both become active again at the same time.

Basically, you hit Gem, spam all you can. Waiting for it to become available again. During that time you can't use the Crescent trinket either... both become available again, you hit Gem once more. They both go into CD... why have the second one up then since you'll never hit it?

Never understood this, but have heard other locks doing it.

Re: Trinket Assistance

Yes that is fact - a spell will use any bonus damage effects that are up at the time of casting for the entire duration of the spell or at its activation (CoD).

For grinding and trash mobs I simply have /use 13 and /use 14 at the beginning of my cast sequence dot macro so it will constantly use any trinket that is up at the time as I used to forget to keep checking if one was up.

On boss fights I activate these manually in order to get the most effective use out of them ie before my first dot rotation and then at a suitable time in the next dot rotation which encompasses as many dots as possible.

And @ Pernicious - activating one trinket will start its, say, 2 minute cooldown but will only activate a 'mini cooldown' on the other trinket of around 15 secs. Therefore you can have one trinket activated and then the next one 15 seconds after, and then you have to wait for the first to reach its 2 minute cooldown before you can activate both again.

I used the Icon and Xi'ri's Gift and they DO NOT share the same cooldown.

You use both on use trinkets because you can get mileage out of them when refreshing DoTs. Activate trinket 13, apply DoTs, proceed to SB spam, when its time to refresh DoTs, Activate trinket 14 and then apply DoTs.

I dunno, it should have triggered each others cooldown. I just looked those up on Wowhead:
Xi'ri's Gift - Items - World of Warcraft

Thottbot:
Thottbot World of Warcraft: Xi'ri's Gift

and both sites list those as sharing a cooldown. If it isn't I can only imagine that its some kinda bug that will be fixed as soon as Blizz realizes it or gets around to it.

Unless you meant that they trigger each others cooldown, but while one may have a long cooldown, the other's is a mini cooldown as in Hixxy's explanation. In which case, I think i understand now. thanks.

@Hixxy
Thanks for explaining, Didn't realize there was a "Mini" cooldown timer.

Re: Trinket Assistance

I think Wowhead and Thottbot report it as sharing a cooldown because you cannot activate both at the same time. So, when I activate the Icon, the Xi'ri's Gift is on "cooldown," but it only lasts as long as the Icon's damage bonus is active.
