Straight +Damage
  • Don Julio's Heart +14 spell damage
This beauty is only accessible to Jewelcrafters. The design is available from the The Consortium quartermaster once revered reputation is obtained. Note the gem also states it is "Unique-Equipped" which means you can only have one of these gems equipped at a time. You can carry or socket as many as you like, but you may only wear one of them. • Stark Blood Garnet +8 Spell Damage
For this gem (and the Horde equivalent), you need to take part in the World PvP activities in Hellfire Peninsula. Once you have 10 x Marks of Honor Hold, you can see your respective PvP Officer in Honor Hold or Thrallmar. Red Gem

  • Runed Blood Garnet +7 Spell Damage

+Damage and Stamina
  • Glowing Tanzanite +6 spell damage, +6 stamina
Chance to drops in heroic mode Black Morass (BM), from any of the bosses. WoWhead has it at 3-4% drop rate however, so you might be running it a lot to get one. Patch 2.4 will see this gem lose the "Unique-Equipped" tag. Purple Gem

  • Infused Amethyst +6 spell damage, +6 stamina
With the same stats as above, this will require you to be running Kharazan as it's a quest reward from Nightbane. Purple Gem

  • Glowing Nightseye +5 spell damage, +6 stamina
Purchasable from your local jewel crafter or Auction house, they can set you back a little or a lot depending on your server. Purple Gem

  • Glowing Shadow Draenite +4 spell damage, +4 stamina
Again, scout out your local jewel crafter or AH. This is a cheaper alternative to the one above and usually about 1/10th the price. This is the one to get if you think you will be upgrading in a short period of time. Purple Gem

For the rich and raiding:
  • Runed Crimson Spinel +12 Spell Damage
This gem is an option for those raiding Black Temple, or with friends happy to part with a very expensive gem. The design for this gem is available when the crafter is Friendly with The Scales of Sand. The gem, Crimson Spinel is attained by trash mobs in Black Temple. If you know you're going to have the piece of equipment for a while, this might be option to those who can obtain it. Red Gem

The design for this gem is available when the crafter is Honored with The Scales of Sand. The gem, Shadowsong Amethyst is attained by trash mobs in Black Temple. But for one extra spell damage and one stamina over the Glowing Nightseye, you'd want to ask yourself if the piece of armor it's really worth it. Purple Gem

Re: What to put in a Red Socket?

Should probably note that epic gems are soon to be available for 15 badges, and the cuts are easy--albeit quite expensive--to get with SSO rep for those who didn't raid T6.
