Question on how much is a good Crit/DMG balance for Affliction

Post (CPR!):

Character Name: thegodfather
Armory Link: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-s...n=Thegodfather
Talent Build: 42/0/19

Quick Info
Health:9.5k
Mana:8.8k
+Damage: 1250 / 1235 with my spellstrike/vash robe un socketed
+Hit: 209 but my hit is fine i have it all worked out to get it to 202 with my new pieces of gear
+Crit: 17%ish but if i go into my new gear itl drop me to 15.90ish
Have you read the gearing guide? yes but did NOT answer my question

Items/Slots in need of immediate upgrade:

  • bracers?

Upgrades you are currently working on:
  • none really my gear is fine i just have a question on how much damage is overkill if there is such a thing..or if crit as affliction wouldl be worth stacking I DONT PLAN TO GO DESTRO EVER
All about you:
hi i currently am in a hyjal/bt running guild but we just started bt..anyways http://www.wowarmory.com/character-s...n=Thegodfather is my gear set up..i am currently at 202 hit and a decent amount of damage..my crit is alright as well for being affliction...my question though i just recently got Vash's robe and Spellstrike pants and was wondering how much crit/damage to go for because the way i see it i can loose the 5 4hit/5dmg gems from my gear and my neck for exalted shattered sun rep and still be hit capped with those two pieces of gear..so that would mean id have 11 sockets total i could use for damage or CRIT/damage(6 from robe/pants and 5 from resockets)..id like to know if there is a point for affliction that crit is better prettymuch..cause i wouldnt mind dropping to 15% crit if i could have like 1400 damage but that seems a bit...i duno much?
what id really like to know is if there is a point where crit gives a bigger damage increase than damage does for affliction.

thanks again

Crit rating will not effect your DoTs at all - only your direct damage spells (Shadowbolt). Since you are raiding and already have the 202 hit rating, I would focus on haste>damage>stamina - in that order if you can - or damage>haste>stamina.

**Edit **

And being a clothee - if you have too much crit, you may pull aggro (if your tank is good, the chance is very slight - but there)

Re: Question on how much is a good Crit/DMG balance for Affliction

well haste seems prettymuch worthless as affliction since it doesnt make your dots tick more..and your dumb if you pull off your tank in a raid when you have a threat meter..shadowbolts are 40-55% of my damage so saying stam is better than crit makes me not want to agree with you also that doesnt answer my question at all..my question was

Is there a point where CRIT gives a bigger damage increase than pure damage does?

Re: Question on how much is a good Crit/DMG balance for Affliction

This point will come really only when you look at ruin as a substitute for UA. Just keep stacking damage until you hit ~20% TT crit(On gear don't gem for it especially as aff) and then switch your UA to ruin. I seem to remember ~1400 being a break even point as pure affliction but I haven't spreadsheeted it recently. You actually have a lot of crit for an aff lock as it stands. I would continue to gem for pure damage. Some upgrades to look at are neck (ZA haste, shadow damage from kara or pvp neck with a 12 damage gem), pants (ss are the best until LCE [T6 kinda suck]), bracers go for the rage ones until sunwell. Other then that just stack damage until 1400.

Stat pref is damage>haste>crit>hit(to get rid of the gems)>>>>>int>stam

Haste will be more useful then crit due to the effect on UA and Shadowbolt and the lower rating needed per %.

Re: Question on how much is a good Crit/DMG balance for Affliction

well unless i had to i dont wanna respec for ruin..i like being UA spec.. as far as neck goes im after the shattered sun one (im aldor so i would get the 200 damage proc)and for bracers im after the one from rage just have only dropped once so far.. and im trying to get the Badges wand to get another 12 damage gem in it. So as far as gemming goes though 12 damage untill i hit the 1400 markish than gem twords haste and just assume my crit will come from my gear than right?

thanks again for the help..like i said i personally wouldnt mind rockin 15% crit if i could just stack damage as much as possible but i assumed the damage/dps doesnt scale as nicely as it would if you started stacking other fun stuff such as haste/crit

Spell Haste (if I recall correctly) will also reduce your GCD... which does mean more dots, or at least they come out of the pipe faster.

We aren't debating intelligence here. It is simple math - crit = more threat....

To directly answer your question. Yes as some point Crit will outweigh damage - to get you more DPS - but the cost (monetarily and in your raid) would make you a liability. Go for Damage before Crit and if you err, it would be on the side of caution.

lol i like how threat gets brought up...honestly if you cant watch your threat in a raid you dont deserve to do it imo just look at a bar and if it gets too high SS..and the whole crit gives more threat and makes me a liability..well wouldnt more damage give me more threat also?..dude he answered the post and you just leave me wondering how much raid content you have actually done with comments like that.

Yeah thats right about the crit Ez. You don't really need to seek it out or gem for it as an aff lock it will just build as you get better gear gem for damage then haste. Eventually ruin will outweigh UA but not for a while around 4pT6 in terms of gear it becomes pretty much required to switch to keep up with other support/dps classes even.

haha cool thats prettymuch what i was looking for..iv always thought crit gems didnt look like they scaled well.. .18 for the blue hybrid and .23 for the epic..but if thats true about ruin than that would probably be my mark to switch over to destro anyways..oh well i dont see me rockin 4 p T6 anytime soon so straight damage it is..it would definatly be nice to find a cool spread sheet that would show me the scale of damage past even the 1400 range/when haste might start playing a bigger roll in my gear cause i honestly dont wanna farm an entire haste set =\

Re: Question on how much is a good Crit/DMG balance for Affliction

Haste will affect about 40-50% of your DPS as Affliction depending purely on your rotation and how many shadowbolts you throw but it becomes more viable with an Aff/Ruin build because of its predication towards SB Spam.

I dropped immolate from my rotation after I specced into Ruin which will outperform UA at around 202 hit, 15%+ crit and 1000+ damage so you could, if you wanted to, spec into Affliction/Ruin and you should see higher DPS results. The problem with ruin is that the difference versus UA isn't hugely significant until you're hitting around 20% TT crit but you're clearly quite close to that so its definately something to consider (and its not like respecs are expensive).

Gemming for crit is pointless in any build, but if you remain as affliction then go for as much +damage as possible.

Trinket > Curse > Corruption > Siphon Life > Shadowbolt Spam. and even before I had 4ptT6 I was pushing 1300 dps on some fights.
