3.1 What should raiding Affliction locks gem for now?

So today I was breaking down what hit rating I actually needed. I was a bit behind in the times, even though I shouldn't have been. I deduced that I need 300 hit rating for a 25 man raid. 3% hit from Suppression and another 3% hit from Shadow Priest's Misery (also Draieni racial but because it is only offered in a 5 person party I thought it better to leave it out. Just in case). Now onto my question. Seeing as to how we need very little hit rating anymore, and as our Corruption and Unstable Affliction spells can now crit, I thought maybe I should start to gem for crit and not haste. I am figuring that from our gear and Spellstone we get enought haste to do the job. But our crit is low now. Even if we get 9% crit from Malediction, I only have about 20% chance to crit a tic. Not good enough for me. What if we regemmed for crit instead of haste? Does crit now outweigh haste for us? I am going to ask around more about this and post in the future. But for now I am asking the warlock community to give some feedback into this idea? Good, bad, absolutely rediculous? Thanks in advance.

If I can, I always gem for spell power above all else, especially affliction. As for haste vs. crit, its debatable now but i still go for haste and use the crit meta for the extra crit bonus

Hit to cap.

Stack spell power. At 3700 spell power, then haste > spell power. But anything before that is pretty fail....You should NEVER socket for Crit. Crit is worse than spirit for locks.

Even affliction locks. And 20% for affliction is actually REALLY high. You should be happy!

3.1 Re: What should raiding Affliction locks gem for now?

as i understand it there are no diminishing returns on stacking SP or anything - so there's no reason to stop at an arbitrary number. i dunno, if someone has some data to prove me wrong i'm all about it.

for affliction it's simple....

gem for hit until capped. after that, get your cap from gear and change out all gems to SP gems, and any gems you need for your meta. i think the only exception to this is with SOME socket bonuses (not often) it's actually worth it to use a SP/haste gem over straight SP, but this is pretty rare and only a small, small difference. it would also be wise to keep around hit gear for those time when your cap changes. for example i have to change out a pair of pants when we don't have a shadow priest... etc... (only in some 10 man runs)

you should get plenty of haste from gear without ever needed to gem for it... so far i've been able to get up to 20% haste (with spellstone) and had nothing but red gems + 2 purple gems for the meta.

There's not a lot of haste on T8, it's mostly crit. So for T8 gear, I'd gem for SP/haste if you need to due to slot or meta requirements.

I have the gear to be swapping between being at 800+ haste to 695 standard without raid buffs.

From what I notice, which is odd, about 700 on heavy affliction builds, dps starts to fall. Additionally the [Valorous Deathbringer Gloves] out dps [Handwraps of Plentiful Recovery] on target dummy 1million damage runs and on mimiron last night.

Doesn't make sense to me though, as both ways I am hitcapped with an spriest. With the t8 ones, I actually go over hit cap.

In any case, I find gearing your gems haste and 2 blue of your choice to get the crit meta gem (which all on my testing IS more potent than 25sp,2%int now) works great to ~700 unbuffed haste. Spellpower numbers are crazy now with gear so I try to offset the lack of 2nd and 3rd bonuses on gear with my gems rather than go straight sp.

1st priority is to get your hit capped or at least to 14% with 3 points into Suppression, give or take. You do not want to rely on shadow priests or Boomkins to make up the other 3% as you will likely be screwed in 10 man raids which often will not take either of them. Sure, you'll have more flexibility in gear/talent choice and pad your other stats, but that isn't worth having to risk your performance in raids by one or two classes & spec of other players.

And it's no valid excuse to blame your poor DPS because "the shadow priest died".

As everyone says,
Cap to your hit cap, whichever it may be with talents/buffs from other classes.

Then, I personally stack spell power gems ALWAYS, unless the socket bonus gives out more spell power / dps which is hardly the case.

You can never go wrong with a runed scarlet ruby in those areas.

Re: What should raiding Affliction locks gem for now?

There are a couple of pieces in the game at the moment (Collar of the Wyrmhunter and Sash of Ancient Power) that you'll want to use the Purified Twilight Opal in because matching the socket bonus will offer up more spellpower/dps than mismatching with a Runed Scarlet Ruby. There may be others, but those are the ones I know of.
