Ok, I need to replace my 25sp 2% intel.

My gear is full of red 19sp gems, CFD needs 2 blues to activate, what blue slot gems do we need that would replace our 19sp gems?

If you lack blue slots and you are looking to replace a couple red slot gems, look for the purple gems that start with 'Purified'. +SP, +Spirit combos to fit into your red slot. The spirit at least partially adds SP due to Fel Armor (and possibly Glyph of Lifetap depending on spec).

If you actually have true blue slots, this is also a good gem to use here to activate your blue slot (and get whatever bonus it gives you) while still getting spell power and counting towards activating the meta gem.

Purified Dreadstone
+12 Spell Power and +10 Spirit
"Matches a Red or Blue Socket."

Purified Twilight Opal
+9 Spell Power and +8 Spirit
"Matches a Red or Blue Socket."

I know i can find the Twilight, lets see if i can get ahold of the Dreadstone. I do have two true Blue slots.

I do a search for "purified" on purple gems all the time on my server, and I have never seen the dreadstone. And it's not like we're not pretty active as a server.

I think it's pretty rare if it is even been put in game yet.

The twilight opal was more along the lines of what I was thinking.

I'm assuming the Chaotic one is better than the ones with +25 sp with Destruction as well, right?

I've seen the recommendation for Chaotic Skyflare Diamond before, too, but here's why I can't quite convince myself to gear it right now: at 1770SP unbuffed in my gear that keeps me hitcapped, I'd have to drop 2 Runed Scarlet Rubies plus the 25SP gem to add back in the Chaotic Skyflare and the 2 blues required for activation.

So I'd lose not just the 25 SP--but 19*2 = 38 more SP, for a total loss of 38 + 25 = 63 SP just to gain that 3% crit damage bonus. Pretty sure that while it's true that the 3% crit damage is better than the 25 SP, 3% crit damage is not better than 63SP.

Looking at the Purfied Dreadstone, then I would only be losing an extra 7 * 2 = 14 SP for a total loss of 25 + 14 = 39 SP. Without doing math or simulation, I'm not convinced (yet) that re-gemming just for that bonus will boost my DPS further. It seems a bit more situational: that is, if you have a choice for your next gem, and are already gemming blues/purples, then yes, going with the Chaotic Skyflare would be better than the 25SP, all things being equal.

Besides, I spend way too much money at the AH anyway....

Remember, the two blues you put in your gem slots will give you back some of that spell power (about 22-25 w/fel armor up and twilight opals), and you're gaining base crit as well. So you're losing about 35-40 sp but gaining 21 crit (equal to maybe 10-ish sp?) and a 3% crit damage increase. I was in the same position as you, and replacing the 25sp + in with the crit meta did increase my dps, even though I had to swap out two of my red gems for purified twilight opals.

The extra damage to each critical strike scales well and really adds up.

If you have Jewelcrafting, you can use a +32 Spellpower gem into a blue socket and it counts towards the 2 for the Chaotic Skyflare Diamond. So just get Jewelcrafting and make sure you have 2 blue sockets which you probably will once you have a bit of Ulduar gear.

Re: Meta Gems

You do not lose that much SP. Those blue slots you can put veiled monarch(?) topaz in, the purple ones that are +9 sp +8 spirit. So you lose 20 sp, but gain 16 spirit which is more spellpower. In the end you probably only lose 15 sp from the gems and 25 from the meta itself. And yes, the math does not lie, it is still better to have 3% increased crit damage.

In the next major content patch the epic JC gems are being altered,

Patch 3.2.0 (PTR): "...we will be removing the prismatic quality of the jewelcrafter-only Dragon’s Eye gems. Like other gems, they will have to match the socket color to receive a socket bonus. When this change occurs, players with qualifying jewelcrafting skill will be provided a yet to be determined amount of Dalaran Jewelecrafter Tokens as compensation."
