LOL...they did it because there is no comparable crafting skill that does anything close to being able to primsatically socket something.

Back on the topic, the ability for DoT's to now crit, and some comments Ghostcrawler made in the recent Q&A about letting Haunt crit scale to 200% make the +21 crit/+3% crit still the top choice (even pre-fix)

...Now they just need to start releasing some new Metas, to go along with the purples on the way.

So I'd lose not just the 25 SP--but 19*2 = 38 more SP, for a total loss of 38 + 25 = 63 SP just to gain that 3% crit damage bonus. Pretty sure that while it's true that the 3% crit damage is better than the 25 SP, 3% crit damage is not better than 63SP.

Looking at the Purfied Dreadstone, then I would only be losing an extra 7 * 2 = 14 SP for a total loss of 25 + 14 = 39 SP. Without doing math or simulation, I'm not convinced (yet) that re-gemming just for that bonus will boost my DPS further. It seems a bit more situational: that is, if you have a choice for your next gem, and are already gemming blues/purples, then yes, going with the Chaotic Skyflare would be better than the 25SP, all things being equal.

Besides, I spend way too much money at the AH anyway....
Actually because of the way things scale, 3% extra crit damage is actually 9% more of the crit damage. Even if the extra 9% damage only occurs a quarter of the time which is VERY conservative , what amounts to an on average 2%+ extra dps boost is nothing to sneeze at. See the prior posts in this thread.

In any case, also as has been gone over in this thread before, it also depends on the amount of spell power you have base. The more spell power you have as a base, the less adding a fixed amount of spell power helps versus upping the damage by a %. If you have 1770 SP unbuffed, your gear is pretty poor right now but as soon as you get some decent gear fleshed out, for sure the balance will tip more definitely over to the 3% crit meta.
