Gemming for my sockets increased dps
I usually gem the standard way....mostly use red gems, use two Purifieds for satisfying the meta, Reckless for yellow if the bonus is +7 or +9sp, etc. But just for the heck of it, I was playing with SimCraft and Wowhead and did a 'what if' profile where I did gem for the socket bonuses. Had to swap in 2 more Reckless and 2 Purifieds and moved a Runed Dragoneye. My SP dropped a hair, but my Spirt and Haste went up a hair. But the Simulcraft results showed an 8 dps increase if I gemmed for the socket bonuses. So now this is making me rethink the standard advice about gemming. Altho i didn't do any simcraft things, i think your about right about that. i recently got a new belt Belt of Biting Cold gemming that with a blue gem (12 sp and 10 spi) but making the gem socket bonus gives me 22 spellpower ( 10 spi /3 =3 + 7 + 12 = 22) while an extra 23 spellpower doesn't give me the spirit. So picking up this particular bonus is worth it. |

It all depends on your particular scale factors and your current gear. Haste scaling goes in steps for example. If a socket bonus is +6 haste for example and that could essentially be the push to give another incinerate (along with the residue of haste before that didn't quite),then yes your dps will increase. 8 dps is hardly anything though. |
