Global cooldown and casting spells

This is probably answered somewhere on the WoW forums but I couldn't find it.

Global cooldown is 1 second correct?

So when you cast an instant spell you have to wait 1 second to cast another.

But for spells with a casting time is there a cooldown?

For example:

*corruption* *1 second cooldown*
*siphon life* *1 second cooldown*
*2.5 second shadowbolt* *1 second cooldown*

Is there a 1 second cooldown after the shadowbolt thus making it take 3.5 seconds to actually cast the spell?

Yes it still has a cooldown but I wouldn't consider it part of the cast time as you could be moving or doing something else during the cooldown phase.

Keep an eye on your action bars when you cast a spell. You'll see your buttons go dark, and slowly light up over the course of the cooldown.

Re: Global cooldown and casting spells

I believe (and my memory is failing on me these days) that the global cooldown is kicked off when you start casting the spells. So while yes, the instant cast spells are actually 1 second, something like a 2.5 second Shadowbolt is still 2.5 seconds... because the 1 second cooldown initiates when you start casting.

Re: Global cooldown and casting spells

I'm pretty sure the global cooldown is 1.5s long, but it starts when you begin to cast a spell, so you will only notice it if the spell cast time is shorter than 1.5s

Correct, 1.5 sec global cooldown. However interestingly the only spell under 1.5sec cast time that isn't instant is Shadowfury, 0.5 sec cast time. It does not trigger the GCD, so when you stun people you have the full 2 secs of stun time to try and get a spell off. Fel Domination and Amplify Curse are instant and do not trigger the GCD.

Correct, the Global cooldown initiates the moment you click a button or hit a key.

You could ofcourse take improved corruption to get a 1.2s, 0.8s
or 0.4s cast time Read some arguments for this long ago that more than 2 points here would be wasted because of the global cooldown. He didn't really think about the extreme usefulness of an instant spell ofcourse.

Shadow fury behaves as the Tauren warstomp, which I use everywhere with my druid. Have yet to try it with my warlock though, beeing affliction atm.
