Mouse Control

I've been playing WOW since it's inception, and have always steered using the arrow buttons and casted with the mouse. I'm trying to learn to cast using bound keys and move using the mouse. IT'S DRIVING ME UP A WALL!!!!! My character constantly gets gets "lost" in close places where all I can see is wall. Then, since I've given up the back-up key, it takes me effort to get turned around so the camera view shows something I can move to. Is this normal?

Here are my settings:
Camera Follow terrain checked, smart pivot checked, auto follow speed med high, camera follow always

mouse Click to move checked, Click-to-move camera smart setting.

Any suggestions????

Re: Mouse Control

You're a keyboard turner, that's the problem.

Re: Mouse Control

I'm not looking in WoW right now, but I think you should NOT have click-to-move enabled.

Click to move is great for 'interacting' with NPCs, as well as it's normal function.
Best bet is to zoom in or out depending on the situation. In PvP, it might be useful to keybind certain views. PvE, it's more common to just scroll in or out as needed. If you're facing a wall, just turn 180 degrees (with the mouse) and you'll probably see a path out.

I have some ideas for you, but first a question?

What type of mouse are you useing?

Ive always done just the opposite and used my mouse to move in all directions, as well as mount and dismount on both my ground mount and flying mount, and I use preset buttons (left hand) to cast and such which still leaves my curser, left and right click available as well.

I use a logitech wireless mouse that has a scroll wheel with a left and a right button, two additional buttons on the left side and one additional button on the top left.

I have my mouse settings/keybindings set as follows:

1. scroll wheel to zoom the camera in and out.
2. scroll wheel left (key bind) strafe left, moves your toon left sideways.
3. scroll wheel right (key bind) strafe right, moves your toon right sideways.
4. the button on the "top left" I use with my thumb to move backwards.
5. the button on the left side "rear" I use with my thumb to mount and dismount my flying mount.
6. the button on the left side "front" I use with my thumb to mount and dismount my ground mount.

And of corse the right and left clickers still work the same as always.

I know everyone has there own play style, as it should be, but this is what works for me, I hope this will help you out.

Thanks for the tips. I've got a Logitech Mx518, which is a gaming mouse. I don't use the buttons enough because I use it left handed.

The problem with using the mouse to move is that, at any one time, much of the area in front of you is occupied so you can't click it to move. Often times, depending on the camera view, areas around me don't seem to be clickable.

Re: Mouse Control

I'm left handed too, using the mouse left (it's hard to find a good non-right hander mouse, but the Razer Copperhead or similar mice are doing well. You should choose one with 'thumb' buttons on each side, easily reachable for use lefties) and steering with the arrow keys.

All my keybinds are set to the Numpad (+Ctrl key as modifier key)

Get used to do quick turns holding your right mouse key down and move the mouse around.
Doing this allows you to run in small circles around a point and Get Out Of The Fire very fast

Re: Mouse Control

Since i am a FPS player as well, i am using WSAD. To change the Camera i use the left mouse button pressed, right mouse button pressed and i can strafe by turning and dragging the camera to the opposite side.
Sounds complex for some, but for me it works perfectly fine. I have my mouse buttons to click spells i have not keybound, can target when not tabbing or using macro, and all the other stuff one can do with it.

Learning mouse turning was very simple for me. I just simply unbound A and D completely and moved the strafe keys from Q and E to A and D instead.

You disable your ability to keyboard turn and I guarantee you'll learn to mouse turn pretty quickly. And if you do get into a bind you can always use the arrow keys anyway.

Then 2 weeks later after having gotten completely used to not having Q and E keys bound to strafing, I was able to bind these to some spells so that I don't have to move over to the 5 or 6 key at all for less used spells.

Q is rank 1 life tap, Shift Q is full life tap
E is chaos bolt

1 is my macro key for a given boss I am fighting. Shift 1 is my alt macro key if there's a 2nd macro I need in a fight. 2 is conflag, 3 incinerate, 4 immolate

The way my keyboard is laid out after learning mouse turning, my right hand is on the mouse for turning and my left hand has all DPS relevant keys within 1 centimeter of each other.
