Creating a farming / gold making alt

Greetings!

I am going to roll a farming alt character and need some advice.

I would like to pick up alchemy / herbalism (or something that has herbalism) as the herb mats on my server sell very quickly and very well.

What character to roll however?

My choices that will get better review with my guild are shaman, paladin or druid.

Of course I can roll a rogue or mage, but less blessing from the guild.

I would like to do AOE farming of mobs and I have seen a AOE paladin in action (quite impressive).

I have seen a frost mage AOE farming and equally impressive.

Never seen a priest or druid or rogue AOE farming, but I have seen a rogue take a target down so very very fast. With my 'lock it would be dot, dot, dot wait (however I would be dotting up another by then).

I have read that elemental shamans can handle multiple mobs easily, you tell me.

The reason I am thinking about another character than my 'lock is because I have maxxed tailoring (and want to keep it) and have 275 in enchanting (and want to keep it).

Ideally I would like to burn down mobs quick with little down time and ability to heal. Nothing ideally fits that desire!

What are your thoughts? What have you all done? What are your recommendations?

I do plan to PvP with the alt to get "welfare" epics to help with my farming.

Personally farming mobs isn't that profitable and (I'm assuming you already have a warlock since you're here) your warlock can already drain tank 3-4 mobs at a time with almost no downtime. If I were you I would go druid, you get the blessing of your guild, the char can fill 3 different roles (dps, tank, heal), your flying form is instant cast and allows you to herb while transformed and finally if you really want to farm mobs you would probably get better results as a druid compared to rogue or paladin (excluding AoE farming that is).

I agree on the druid. Besides the flight form your other forms help at lower levels:
Seal form lets you farm stranglekelp like a madman. Sure as a warlock you have underwater breathing, but you have to remember to recast it if you're down there for awhile. Besides seal form has a speed boost in water making it quicker to gather as well.
Travel from gets you between nodes quickly until you can get a mount.
Cat form lets you stealth around pesky mobs to get to nodes with less aggro. and cat can also whoop some butt with rogue-like damage.
Too many mobs on you? Throw hots on yourself and Bear form.

So yeah, lots of helpful stuff for gathering.

If you're going to make an alt that you can use for farming, by all means go ahead. But don't make an alt just for the specific purpose of farming.. have fun on that toon!

I just got my rogue to 70, and I enjoy just questing/grinding on it a lot more than I do on my lock, despite the fact that my lock out-farms my rogue. Come kara gear that will change somewhat, but make an alt for a change in pace, not just to have a character to go chinese-farmer on when you need money.

So true. Make an Undead Rogue and just gank Ally like crazy! Hopefully, they are mostly Gnomes.

Here is an idea, create an Ally toon also and take a picture or video of the gank. Place the video or picture on a site you create like My Space and then jump on the Ally toon. Send an in game letter to the Ally you just ganked with a message like "YOU HAVE BEEN GANKED! To see this wonderful event, please go to insert link and relive this most wonderful moment."

Better yet! Name the Site "Toon's name Gank of the Day!" and have your toon make an announcement on Channel 1 "Toon's Name has struck again! To see today’s GANK, please visit website."

Now talk about making a name for your toon!

WOW! I love this idea! I'm doing it!!! Now don't any of you copy me.

darn good advice right here.
but why do alchemy if you want a farmer? Wouldnt skinning be more profitable.
Hunter is also another good choice. almost 0 down time

For my server I agree. I have been a skinner/tailor since day one on my lock, skinning has been amazing income for me. Tailoring is nice too for making bags to sell from cloth I already get from killing.
However, the OP said he noticed that herbs sell really good on his server. So for him it may be more profitable than skinning - especially if he knows where all the usual nodes are that the plants grow in.

imo hunter is good because if played well they can handle a good amount of farming-as for profs i would suggest not only alchy, but also finding another gathering that does well, especially skinnin. Between skin, alch, and sellin cloth-no matter what you farm you would make a good profit. Plus hunters are pretty fun to play. also with aid you can heal urself, especially while your pet takes the hits :D

I would say druid as well. For a lot of the reasons stated above. Flight form means you can herb while shifted in case you need to make a quick getaway. Seal form is great for farming stranglekelp, since you move faster than just swimming. Another plus is you can do Steath runs into Slave pens and Underbog and farm ancient lichen there. Plus, they're fun to play in instaces as well.
